It is important to understand that there are three groups of people making up the current leadership of the church and its bureaucracy: stupid people, evil people, and heroic saintly men acting as a bulwark and remedy against the first two. The stupid ones are secular humanists who think all the theological and spiritual aspects of the Church are silly outdated superstitions, and love the church for basically being a global superpowered NGO. They see in it the ability to push their leftist, feelings-based, political and social goals further under the cover of Catholicism, but they have no actual religious belief or theological connection to Catholicism in any way. They are the shallow, superficial, vibes-based activists and ideologues who couldn't tell you where their beliefs come from or provide any intellectual defense of their ideology, but they are completely and entirely certain they are right. The evil ones have similar goals as the stupid ones, but they know exactly what they are doing. They know what ideology they serve, they are steeped in the academia behind their ideology, and they understand what the Catholic church is understand the power that comes from using it in a subversive way. If their eventual goals were achieved, a one-world government rooted in marxist economic theory and secular humanism, they would immediately turn around and ban all religions, including Catholicism, and destroy every physical piece of the church they could, from the buildings to the books to the vestments and artwork. The heroic saintly men acting as a bulwark and remedy against the first two are likewise a mixture of two groups: simple but profoundly faithful men who fully believe everything the Church teaches and who are striving to live their lives accordingly, but who have no idea of, or concern about, the secular political infiltration of the church. These men simply protect the church through their faithful witness and evangelization of the world by their example and loyal living out of their vocations. The second group of these great men are the ones who are fully aware of the evil infiltration, but are able to continue to fight against it and live out their vocations faithfully without becoming discouraged or schismatic. They know the gates of hell will not prevail and are able to wade through the mud and muck without being weighed down because their depth of faith and commitment to the Sacraments. I consider Bishop Barron to be part of this second group.
