Nigeria’s 2026 Federal Budget is worth N68.32 trillion. But whose needs are reflected in how that money is spent?
Think about the young Nigerian searching for opportunities, the girl who needs quality education, or the person with a disability who struggles to access public facilities. How much of the budget is directed towards their needs?

N195m on presidential trips... N225m for presidential emergency related expenses and N22m paid to personal accounts.
Dear Nigerians, On today's #DiscoveriesFromGovspend, We discovered that the Presidency spent approximately ₦504 million in public funds between March and June 2026.
Here is what the records show:
₦195m on presidential trips: In April 2026, three payments of ₦79m, ₦15m, and ₦100m were recorded for presidential trips and related expenses.
₦225m was spent on emergency-related expenses in June 2026.
In April 2026, ₦61.8 million was spent on ceremonial helmets and 33 ceremonial aiguillettes, ranks, and files for the mounted troop.
₦7.13m for a presidential transition event in Egypt in April 2026 and ₦10m for a UK trade meeting in March 2026
These entries total approximately ₦504.02 million across the eight transactions shown.
The expenditure descriptions raise important questions about spending priorities, value for money, and the public benefits delivered.
The final three transactions, amounting to approximately ₦22 million, are also concerning because the records identify payments to personal accounts. Meanwhile, the Financial Regulations 2009, Chapter 7, Section 713, prohibit paying public funds into private accounts.
At a time when citizens are facing rising living costs and public services remain under delivered, transparency is not optional.
What were these payments intended to achieve? What value did Nigerians receive? And how were these expenditures justified?
Visit govspend.ng to examine government transactions, follow the money, and demand accountability.

Dataphyte Foundation, @CJIDAfrica, @DEANinitiative, @BudgITng and @YIAGA officially launched the NEDO Consortium in Abuja.
@Abdek_SDGs, Programme Manager at Dataphyte Foundation, talked about how the partnership will work across the 2027 electoral cycle. He explained that NEDO will connect observer networks, data, technology and institutional expertise, while collaborating with other civil society organisations, media groups and researchers to contribute to and draw from the consortium’s shared election data.
With over 4,000 observers to be deployed during the 2027 elections, the approach is intended to widen coverage, reduce duplication and provide a stronger evidence base for verification, public reporting, research and electoral reform.
State governments have seen significant increases in revenue in recent years. How they allocate these funds across sectors such as education, health and infrastructure can shape the services citizens receive.
At #StateofStates2026, we’ll examine how these spending decisions translate into better outcomes for citizens and how state governments prioritise the needs of their people.
We’re delighted to announce another key panellist, Dr. Chinedum Nwoko, Consulting Executive at Policy Associates, whose more than four decades of experience span academia, economic and fiscal reform, public expenditure management and governance.
Throughout his career, Dr. Nwoko has worked with governments, public institutions, international development partners and donor-funded programmes to strengthen public financial management and public sector reform.
He’ll be part of the discussion on “From Budget Choices to Better Outcomes: Are States Spending Where It Matters?”

Spreadsheets don’t hold governments accountable; people do.
Look closely at these slides from #StateofStates2025. The charts and numbers gave us the facts, but the real energy of last year’s summit came from the people who filled the room.
Who do you recognise in these photos? 👀
The faces in these frames are the real reason we do this. A single conference doesn’t change the world, but these photos catch the exact second the data gets personal for our attendees.

With COP31 approaching and Nigeria’s budget and energy transition planning processes under way, the conversation around climate finance needs to go beyond commitments. Young Nigerians need to know where the money is going, how it is being spent and whether it is delivering results for communities.
Tracking climate finance can be difficult. Funds flow through different institutions and funding channels, while gaps in project-level data and inconsistent reporting make it harder to trace allocations, track spending and assess the impact of climate investments.
Young people have a stake in these decisions and the future they will inherit. At Green Accountability for Young Voices, we will explore how young Nigerians can use public data to track climate finance, scrutinise green budget allocations and hold decision-makers accountable for how these funds are used.

Mr. Seun Onigbinde(@oluseun) on where public project tracking goes next:
1. Scale the community champions. Paid officers can’t keep expanding. Volunteers on the ground can.
2. Use AI to estimate what a project should cost, down to the blocks and cement, and to show what a proper community school could look like.
The goal: give people a vision of what a proper society should be.

Our Founder and Executive Director, David Ogunlade, AICMC was one of the top 3 winners of the BudgIT Methane Mission Creators Challenge, organised by @BudgITng
At The Intelligentsia Leadership Foundation @_TheILF we're raising ethically sound leaders, and that includes leaders who take ESG seriously. How we handle our energy, our environment and our communities is a leadership question, not just a policy one.
David's entry makes the point plainly about how informed citizens are the strongest force for accountability, and gas flaring has gone on long enough.

Have you ever been charged for something you didn’t ask for and then told to pay up or lose access to the service? Imagine that happening with your electricity. You’re being asked to pay for a billing error you didn’t cause, and if you don’t pay, you’re left in the dark.
In Lagos, Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) added a whopping N181,000 to Ette’s meter after claiming he had been placed on Band A but billed at the lower Band B rate. The company said the charge was to recover what it described as “lost income” from the billing error. Until he pays the full amount, he cannot buy more electricity.
When Ette and other residents sought answers, they were met with hostility instead of a clear explanation.
