Kibera is a preview. Hundreds of millions live in cash-based economies with no formal bank access. @Vivianna_ki and I just documented how the @AfribitKibera community leapfrogged straight to permissionless money.

We’re excited to announce the Q2, 2026 Btrust Developer Grant recipients. 🚀
Seven Bitcoin open-source developers were awarded grants last quarter, including three starter grant recipients and four long-term open-source cohort members.
This cohort continues our mission to decentralize Bitcoin open-source development by supporting talented contributors from the Global Majority.
Their work spans wallet infrastructure, @bitcoincoreorg testing, developer tools, privacy-preserving payments, peer-to-peer exchange infrastructure, cryptography, and user-facing bitcoin applications.
The quarter also marked an important first for us: for the first time, we supported a grantee working on peer-to-peer exchange infrastructure.

Maybe it's just me, but everywhere I go I see bitcoin Lightning Addresses! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
We’ve been on a side-quest, and we have good news from the other side! 40 million Kenyans now have a bitcoin Lightning Address! They didn’t need to sign up for one because they had it this entire time, attached to the phone number in their pocket!
Try it: send bitcoin to [email protected] (254 is optional). The BTC arrives as KES in their M-Pesa. ⚡ EVERY M-Pesa number works. All 40,000,000.
Wallets with LUD-09 support give you a nice clickable link to see your M-Pesa receipt. For example: bitcoin.co.ke/receipt/6528a4…

During my presentation at @btcplusplus NBO, I did a live walkthrough. We read a real block on mempool.space, sent an onchain transaction, zapped sats across the room over Lightning, and stacked our first sats from M-Pesa into self-custody with bitika.xyz.

90 builders. 48 hours. Multiple ideas brought to life. 🚀
The @btcplusplus open source edition hackathon showcased what happens when builders are given the opportunity to collaborate, experiment, and ship.
From cross-border payments and open-source tooling to Bitcoin infrastructure, Nostr applications, and financial inclusion solutions, the quality of projects was exceptional.
Read our full recap for a breakdown of the winning projects, the builders behind them, and why we're excited about what's being built across Africa and beyond

Last week we had the pleasure of supporting @btcplusplus Nairobi 🇰🇪, the first bitcoin++ conference in Africa and the first-ever open source edition.
Over three incredible days, we saw developers, researchers, educators, and builders come together to explore Bitcoin, Lightning, privacy, mining, open-source development, developer tooling, financial infrastructure, and the future of building on Bitcoin. It was inspiring to see so many ideas turn into working projects tackling real-world challenges.
We're especially proud of the strong representation from our community, with members speaking across the conference and teams building projects that earned recognition across multiple hackathon categories.
A huge thank you to @niftynei and the entire bitcoin++ team for bringing this milestone event to Africa, as well as the speakers, mentors, judges, volunteers, sponsors, and every attendee who made it such a success.
We're excited to see the projects, collaborations, and conversations that started here continue long after the conference.
See you next year! 🚀

Making complex Bitcoin ideas simple is an art, and Sharon Murugi is a master! 🎨✨ As the Communications Lead at Btrust @btrustteam , she uses her psychology background to build meaningful communities and tell the story of decentralized open-source development.
If you want to see how we bridge the gap between high-tech and human connection, you NEED to be in the room with Sharon. Missing this means missing the human side of the future! 🌍🙌

Some mid-trip thoughts from Kenya after @btcplusplus.
There are smart bitcoiners all over the world working on things they believe are important, and that often are important in principle, but the work is frequently disconnected from activities that affect real users. (e.g., End the Fed, cypherpunk citadels, abstract sovereignty debates, etc.) After a while with no real progress, it starts to sound pedantic/shrill.
The difference in Kenya, partly enabled by the ubiquity of M-Pesa and the problems it brings, is that the ideas and solutions people come up with here have immediate and substantial impact on the lives of people around them.
The hackathon projects were full of remittance apps, developer education projects, and tools aimed directly at the communities they actually know.
And when people see those projects come to life, they immediately connect them with people they know back home who desperately need these solutions. (Hence the massive cheers and applause during the hackathon finalist presentations)
That creates a flywheel of enthusiasm, urgency, agency, and mountain-moving energy that is hard not to be inspired by. I think orgs like @btrustteam and @HRF understand this deeply, which is why they’ve focused so much effort on this region.
I’m grateful for the first half of the trip, and looking forward to the rest, including @btcnairobi_conf this week.

One thing that constantly stands out is the endless opportunities that open source contributions unlock for builders.
For this same reason reviewer's need quality PR's that are not infiltrated by unnecessary slop or spam to help drive meaningful contributions.
A boot camp grad finishes a Rust tutorial, opens Bitcoin core, picks a random "good first issue" and submits something a maintainer has to politely close.
Multiply that by hundreds of contributors a week, the cost lands on the tiny number of senior maintainers who's time is the scarcest resource.
We built @buildwithrobin an ai agent that helps newbies and even senior engineers know when and what to contribute to depending on their level of expertise and the urgency of an issue ( as prioritized by the maintainer )
Built as a light weight chrome extension developers can easily scan a GitHub repo, get real time insights on the core issues first hand and which ones to begin with depending on their skill level.
We made it to finals today, demo is tomorrow wish us luck!🧡
