Moreover, even if we take the baseless NGO estimate of 2,000 deaths in custody among 90,000 inmates at face value, that STILL amounts to a lower mortality rate than among El Salvador’s general population.
Mortality rate in prison since 2022, according to NGOs:
~670 per 100k per year
Mortality rate in the general population since 2022:
~750 per 100k per year
And if we use the actual numbers, not the imaginary NGO ones, that’s 110,000 inmates and 600 deaths in custody since 2022, which puts the mortality rate in prison at:
~145 per 100k per year.
The rate in Norway, for example, is over 300 per 100k per year.
So their accusation is essentially that people who go to prison don’t become immortal 😬

NGOs have claimed that El Salvador's crackdown isn't worth it because a few hundred gangsters have died while in prison.
However, the crackdown has averted far more homicides than criminals have died in prison as a result, so this argument doesn't hold water.

My latest article is about El Salvador.
The country has become safe--I've rigorously documented that and shown that every objection falls flat--but will that lead to growth?
Will El Salvador become rich?

El Salvador homicide update:
The country is on track to have its lowest year ever, with just 60% of the homicide rate of stereotypically-peaceful Canada.
The country is now *very* safe.
