Raro, ¿no?

Buying pumpkins today at Kroger.
Two young men come up to me. One asks me:
"Hey, sorry for the odd question, but what year is it?"
I look at them oddly, "2026?"
They exchange a wide-eyed glance, the 2nd guy says, "Dude, the Siberian Superplague!"
Then they both ran off.
Probably nothing, right?

Take note, coaches.
This is a perfect example of how not to communicate with your players in high-stakes moments.
When things go wrong, your job isn't to make sure players know they played badly.
They already know.
Instead, give them something actionable to move toward.
“What do we do next?”
“What is the adjustment?”
“What do you need from each other?”
That kind of language gives the brain a direction, and helps with performance, instead of dwelling on mistakes.
Telling players what they're doing wrong, piling on emotion, or amplifying the pressure can easily create more of the thing you're trying to prevent.
And this is where I think esports still has a lot of room to professionalize.
In traditional sports, emotional coaching and high-energy confrontation can sometimes have a different function. Athletes can physically expend that energy through movement. (running faster, more agressive/power etc.)
In esports, the performance itself is largely cognitive.
Your players still need to make decisions.
Process information.
Communicate.
Stay adaptable.
So if your communication increases emotional load at the exact moment you need clarity, you have to ask whether you're actually helping performance.
And more importantly:
What's underneath the mistake?
Pressure?
Uncertainty?
A communication problem?
A lack of clarity?
A strategic issue?
Confidence?
If you only react to the visible symptom, you never get to the actual problem.
This doesn't mean coaches should be emotionless.
Passion matters.
Standards matter.
Accountability matters.
But there is a difference between bringing intensity and transferring your emotions onto your players.
Connection before correction.
Players are humans first — not machines that exist purely to execute our expectations.
Connection before correction
And I think that's an important part of professionalizing esports:
We ask players to be accountable, professional, disciplined and constantly improving.
We should expect the same from the people coaching them.
Coaches: don't just ask yourself whether your communication is passionate.
Ask:
“Is what I'm saying actually helping my players perform better right now?”
