'THE GHOST IN THE SHELL' (2026) uses fictional names for several real-world countries referenced in Masamune Shirow's original manga
🇺🇸 United States → MAG Union
🇷🇺 USSR → Volgarena
🇮🇱 Israel → Ghorantl
🇸🇾 Syria → Mesamia
The changes are present in the Japanese version of the anime, and similar substitute fictionalized countries have appeared in previous GITS adaptations as well
Notably, the Latin American Spanish dub retains the original references, with dub director Daniel Lacy stating that the decision was made to stay faithful to the manga
