We filmed platelet production to see how each person makes 100 BILLION of them a day.
Platelets are tiny blood cells that prevent bleeding.
They're made by giant cells in the bone marrow called megakaryocytes, but exactly how has been controversial…

Membrane budding is a major mechanism of in vivo platelet biogenesis
Platelets are made by megakaryocytes but the mechanism is unclear. We filmed the direct release of platelets by membrane budding and show that this is a major mechanism of platelet production.

I’m excited to share our latest study, published today in @NatImmunol It has been long known that pregnancy reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, yet the biological mechanisms underlying this protection have remained largely unknown. nature.com/articles/s41590-0…
Follow me on Bluesky for (increasingly rare) microscopy and immunology content! bsky.app/profile/scicad.bsky…
I miss having endless time for sharing creation in all its microscopic glory, but early parenthood is even better (most of the time).

What's the craziest Cre/loxP strategy you've seen?
I was sick of manually sketching out complex Cre/lox and Dre/rox recombination outcomes, so I created a little program to simulate them. Hope it saves you some time. cadaws.github.io/recombine/

Using advanced #imaging & AI, WEHI scientists uncovered how hormone-sensing breast cells divide, grow & move during puberty and pregnancy. This helps us understand how #breastcancer forms, especially in BRCA 1 & 2 carriers.

I thank all the collaborators and funders as well as my present and past institutions in USA, UK and India for supporting my team.
Thanks for having me @ajithvasanthan and @ONJCRI ! Thoroughly enjoyed the many chats and questions.
Great to have @calebadawson @WEHI_research speak at our @ONJCRI institute seminar on all things macrophages in the mammary gland. Fantastic science and loved the stunning images!!
