How to be clear.
Ireland is an EU member state the same as any or all other 26. Same customs union, same single market.
Ireland will not/cannot be a semi-member to accomodate the very english brexit.

When we have ministers saying “we couldn’t contain it as we’re an island unlike Australia and New Zealand” it becomes fairly clear why we’ve failed. We’re an island which is why we had the best chance of containing it.
