Would you rather have consistent spending throughout retirement, or spend more while you’re younger ('go go' years) and cut back later?

These articles about where to live in retirement drive me nuts. In my opinion, a single question should determine where to live in retirement: Where do you have the biggest concentration of people you love who love you back? Some things are not about money.

With the return of the subsidy cliff in marketplace insurance (this is the insurance you get on if you retire before Medicare), I am once again asking you to rethink your dividend investing strategy. Dividend investing (exclusively) gives up so much flexibility in tax planning

$1 over subsidy cliff can cost tens of thousands in lost premium tax credits.

One caveat I should mention: There is an ACA subsidy cliff past a certain point (e.g $84,600 of income for married couples in 2026) that can cost 15-20K in lost premium tax credits. Taxable accounts could play a key role towards avoiding this until Medicare at age 65 because you only pay taxes on the gains. This isn’t a problem for me because I have subsidized Federal health insurance for life as a Federal retiree. H/T @camp_wealth
I see some people that worry if they put too much (or all) of their money into retirement accounts then they won’t be able to retire prior to 59 1/2 because it’s all “locked up.” What’s reality? If you’re not saving so much that you’re completely filling these up as well as spilling over into taxables, then you wouldn’t be able to retire that early anyway. The problem literally takes care of itself.

One of the most underrated early retirement risks: Being rich on paper but poor in tax flexibility.

Early retirement before Medicare, a Roth conversion can have two costs: 1. Income tax 2. The health insurance premium tax credit you lose by increasing income Ignoring the second one is how people get blindsided with health insurance costs.

The taxable brokerage account is not just an investment account. For early retirees, it can be the account that helps manage taxes, health insurance subsidies, and the bridge to 59 1/2. It's a powerful early retirement account.

Two couples can both have the same portfolio value. Same ages. Same retirement date. Same spending goal. But if one has everything in pre-tax accounts and the other has cash, brokerage, and Roth money… they do not have the same retirement plan.

Early retirement before Medicare, the goal is not always to report the lowest income possible. Sometimes you need to keep income down. Sometimes you need to create income on purpose. The real goal is creating the right amount of income for ACA subsidies.

My advice to younger advisors who reach out to me and want to build a brand online: 1. If you're at a firm that doesn't allow personal brand building or social media posting...that needs to change (otherwise the rest of the list is pointless) 2. Contemplate if creating content is worth your time and effort as a way to get yourself out there. 3. Contemplate whether or not you really want to do this every day for years on end 4. Be known for something specific that differentiates 5. Don't parrot the same generic financial information as every other advisor on social media 6. Speak to your ideal client profile as much as possible 7. Get something on the timeline every single day, the algorithm is brutal if you take breaks 8. Cut your tie off and be a real human 9. Show personality in your own way 10. Engage in good faith with every industry stakeholder, follower, etc 11. Get comfortable being uncomfortable at the beginning 12. Respond to as many DMs and comments as you can 13. Keep your emotions in check

The Roth conversion window does not stay open forever. ACA subsidies can block it. Social Security can narrow it. RMDs can close it. Early retirement creates opportunity, but only if you actually use it.

The goal is not to pay the lowest tax bill this year. The goal is to avoid overpaying taxes for the rest of your life. Those are not always the same thing.

People love simple tax rules. Never pay taxes before you have to. Always do Roth conversions in low brackets. Live off taxable first. But retirement tax planning is layered. Simple rules can fall apart once ACA subsidies, IRMAA, Social Security, and RMDs enter the room.

High dividends in a taxable account can feel nice in retirement. But they also reduce flexibility. Dividend income shows up whether you need it or not. Selling shares gives you more control over when income hits the tax return.

A taxable brokerage account can be a secret weapon in early retirement. Not because it is “better” than an IRA. Because it gives you control. You decide when to realize gains. You decide how much income to show. You create room to plan.

If anyone is seeing @KurtSupeCPA blow up on here it's because he has insane work ethic and incredible skill with storytelling. Also, he mentioned our course might've helped a bit (shameless plug 😅)
Diving into social media 7 years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my business. It helped me grow @AllStWealth from $0 to $1.5M in revenue in about 4 years (2025 numbers). Now, I have ~30 advisors every week asking to meet, pick my brain, and learn how to use social media to grow their firms. Because of that, @camp_wealth, @treytondotcom, and I built a social media course specifically for financial advisors — showing you exactly how to get started and build a sustainable content system. ✔️ 3+ hours of practical, step-by-step training ✔️ Built for real advisors with real practices ✔️ Already used by 100+ advisors in the last year We’re offering 33% off to kick off the year.
