Today’s alcohol #DutyReceipts, which show receipts in January lower for spirits, wine & beer than in January 2025, will come as no surprise to UK wine & spirits businesses who continue to see consumers spending less as a result of some of the highest excise duty rates in Europe.

People like Ben at Puddingstone Distillery are more than just distillers - they're at the heart of their communities. That's why @campfiregin has joined calls for a complete excise duty freeze for spirits in tomorrow's Budget to protect jobs and investment.
Would love your support @TweetingCollins

Three in ten pubs say they may not survive another year if costs increase. Pubs are more than pints; if the Chancellor is serious about supporting them, she must freeze excise duty at the Budget.

Even as a small supposedly exempt business we are charged for the packaging our pallets of bottles arrive in. It’s not sustainable for us to absorb the cost but customers cannot afford the increases either if we were to pass them on @TweetingCollins
EPR fees are “extraordinarily high” 📈

Staggered that our ICO fee has gone up £12 this year & for what for? To pay for staff salary increases? Another stealth tax on small business. No pay rise for us as business owners 😫 @TweetingCollins #DataProtection

Not only are pubs and distillers taking the hit from the Tory's 10.1% duty hike, but the @hmtreasury has lost over £300m and counting. Ahead of the budget, UKSA members @campfiregin, @rivetdistillery and @thamesisdock have been making the case to reverse the hike.

Today's ONS release shows that alcoholic drinks CPI is running at nearly three times the headline rate of 2.3%.
August's record duty increases continue to drive inflation.

Government’s own figures show that last year’s historic duty increases are fuelling #inflation. If the Government is really serious about tackling inflation, then it must #CutDrinksDuty at next month’s Budget. 🍷🍸

So the minimum wage is set to go up. Great news for employees, terrible for employers. More increases to business overheads. I thought the government were looking to drive down costs of goods and services to reduce inflation. Buy and drink gin now while it’s viable to make/enjoy – at East, England

As highlighted by db this morning, the headline drop in overall inflation masks what has happened to alcohol in the last quarter...
The overall drop in inflation is positive news bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-67423…
BUT wine and spirits have seen a nearly triple digit increase in inflation in the last 3 months.
Increasing duty yet again would further fuel inflation, undermining the Government’s overall aim #FreezeDuty

The @wstauk and @WSTA_Miles are absolutely correct in highlighting how bad the latest alcohol duty reforms are. I find it staggering that we’ve seen ministers for transport and environment rolled out to hopefully justify these changes but not the @Conservatives #chancellor – at East, England
#Tax rhetoric v reality
Since 2010 x6(!) @Conservatives Chancellors have increased duty by
⬆️21% on beer
⬆️32% on spirits
⬆️58% on wine🤦🏽♀️
⬆️90% on fortified wine!
Biggest duty increase in c.50 years
