Last week, I debuted my new studio: Material Album. The name comes from the idea of "material agency": in any craft, the materials have a voice. Code, culture, language, time, place, they all have a grain. We shape the materials, they shape us back.
Our first project is a physical space. We built a gallery of new and niche technology in the heart of San Francisco. It's called USER EXPERIENCE, presented by @ForerunnerVC
Despite all the uncertainty, this is the most interesting and inspiring moment I've ever seen. But walking around downtown SF, you wouldn't know it.
The optimism, eclecticism, joy and humor of what people are building lives on screens and in feeds. I wanted a home for it on the streetscape of SF, the epicenter of this moment in many ways, and to break up the boring brandscape of the city center.
I wanted to explore the materials of the city, this moment in tech, culture, nostalgia, physical design, and in-person community building, creating a canvas for designing an experience.

Always hard to put in to words how incredible the team we have at Ulysses is!

It’s kind of humiliating when the arts and crafts can tell there’s impatience in your heart

Making posters for @DurinMining
I fully believe in Durin’s mission, humans should not be lifting heavy stuff in torrid/freezing conditions near instagib rotating equipment. Robots should do all that

Add what's in short supply. X is saturated with cask-strength rudeness but is short on beautiful material culture (compared to IG, tiktok)
So post nice-looking stuff, I think there's a hunger for that

Replying to @UlyssesInc
@UlyssesInc has the best branding of any hard tech startup its stage.
Everything feels cohesive from their web presence to the moment you first step into their office.
There’s lots of leverage in having a great brand, hiring being a big one.

We’re excited to partner with the Ulysses team for their Series A.
America needs a new kind of underwater deterrence.
Fiber optic cables, vast offshore resources, and maritime chokepoints are all increasingly contested. Security in this environment cannot rest on undersea assets too precious to deploy.
Founders Akhil, Will, Colm, and Jamie came to the US and created something we had been struggling to produce: a small, autonomous underwater vehicle that aims to outperform the primes at a fraction of the cost.
With a vertically integrated manufacturing facility and fresh capital, they're ready to scale to protect the world’s oceans.
This is an incredible team on a course to conquer the blue frontier, and we're thrilled to be joining them. They're hiring engineers and operators in San Francisco.

We are building The Ocean Company.
The ocean is 71% of the planet. But it is less explored than Mars, and full of secrets, waiting to be told.
It is the backbone of global defense. Home to the critical infrastructure that powers our world. And the key to the health of our planet.
This frontier needs technology to protect and steward it.
We are building it. And we need more builders

Growing up as a kid I was so inspired watching Steve Irwin talk with such passion about the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
So it feels like the gift of a lifetime to be able to share that @ulyssesinc has been working with the stewards of this great ecosystem to bring it back from the brink at a never-seen-before scale.
We’re using Mako, our flagship AUV, to autonomous plant seagrass seeds across the GBR.
Traditional restoration methods are slow and expensive.
Our technology can work 100x faster and 100x cheaper.
We are excited to work with GBRF and CQU to restore the majesty of this beautiful, one-of-a-kind natural resource.

Frontiers must be explored.
America was built on the pursuit of the Great Western Frontier.

I’m hiring for two major roles on my team at Ulysses.
There has not been a better time to join Ulysses.
In the last few months, revenue & pipeline have gone vertical, and we've made significant technological breakthroughs that will forever change how subsea work is done.
It's been the most successful period in our company's history, and we are just getting started.
We will be announcing some of these breakthroughs soon. Stay tuned.
The jobs:
1. GM, Commercial: Your job is to stand up and lead our commercial business unit. Take our early contracts and scale them to build a machine that reshapes how critical telecoms and energy infrastructure is inspected and repaired.
2. Director of Marketing and Brand. Your job is to make Ulysses impossible to ignore. World-build. Make Ulysses "the Ocean Company". Take the air out of the room. High taste. No slop. Tell the world what Ulysses does.
Quit your boring desk job.
The ocean is calling.
