At 17, Deneys Reitz rode out with a Transvaal commando at the start of the 2nd Boer War. He fought at Spion Kop, then joined Smuts’s raid deep into the British-held Cape Colony. He refused to accept British rule after the war and self-exiled in Madagascar.

He later returned, fought for Britain in WWI, and became a South African statesman.

Cape Rebels, colonials from the Cape Colony who joined the Boer Forces. Once captured they were tried for high treason. Some were executed either by hanging or the firing squad. Others were sentenced to life imprisonment on Hawkins Island, Bermuda and St Helena.
