"loss of fandom etiquette" and when there used to be entire communities dedicated to the vicious mocking other people's fic.
i am also guilty of looking at fandom of yore with rose-tinted glasses, but i think shit like sporking is one of the reasons fic writers developed an almost pathological culture of resistance to the idea of improvement. there's been a real overcorrection.
i actually miss when fic was more ambitious and pretentious. i'd gladly take weirdly formatted lapslock songfic over ai slop anyday. i love intention, even when it doesn't work.

Delivery, unfortunately. The post is short with no context and explanation which is going to be read as sarcastic or egotistical. There are no examples, which makes its usefulness void, so it gains the tone of mom telling a kid what to do, so everyone's knee-jerk reaction is "no"
THIS. reading might be good for the brain, but have we considered what it does to the immortal soul? exposure to trash literature actually harms the delicate female brain, which is incapable of discerning fantasy from reality! the only book these harlots need is the good one!!!
woman with an audrey horne pfp forwarding the opposite of ethel cain’s “transgressive art bad when men good when women” thesis by concluding “transgressive art good when men bad when women” we are literally never getting out of this hell of our own creation 😭

these ppl are on there not understanding that the protagonist of a book isn't literally them, the reader . which is not an issue that a fully literate person experiences
i wish people would stop trying to launder their moral/aesthetic offense as legitimate feminist criticism. if you were serious, you’d engage with the film as a whole and just not this picture of tits you keep sending. oh no, we can see their dirty pillows!
i genuinely think much of the backlash towards the devils is rooted in people’s discomfort with seeing naked women on screen in a non-pornographic setting. to these people, the female body itself is a pornographic display.
hey so i just want to go on record stating my strong opposition to the gender essentialism of “edgy art bad when men but good when women” and publicly call for a return of feminist criticism that actually engages with art instead of just trying to police it.

how? ethel is a character, and like she said it’s different coming from a female creator. and just because it wasn’t your take on the movie does not make her interpretation wrong. i literally agree it’s a completely disgusting and stupid movie
yes, father what’s his face is tortured and burned at the stake while the nuns are not. you’d know that, if you’d actually ever seen the film.
okay but i am laughing at the idea of a stalker romance where both the guy and the girl are stalking each other. that’s true love baby.
i’m so tired of natalie wynn posting obvious ragebait and then acting dense when people react. but what i can’t figure out is if it’s just pure engagement farming bc rent is due, or if she has some psychosexual fixation and gets off imagining herself as a victim of an angry mob.

I want to help people interpret this tweet because many are struggling. When I say “worse than I thought” I’m proposing a counterfactual situation: what I expected Trump 2 to be. I was expecting Hitler. Trump 2 is very bad, but not Hitler bad. I therefore am massively relieved that it’s not Hitler bad. So, although it is bad, though millions have died (as expected), the situation is much less bad than my expectation of how bad it was going to be. The fact that my expectations of how bad it was going to be are worse than what it is, does not imply that what it is, is not bad. Merely that it is less bad than the counterfactual situation—that is, less bad than my expectations.
counterargument: ebert was embarrassed by his early career foray into sexploitation filmmaking. his script for beyond the valley of the dolls includes multiple rapes, murderous queers, and a sleeping woman being forced to fellate a gun before her brains are blown out.
sister jeanne laughs in madeline’s face when the girl says the nuns are there bc they love god,
correcting her that they’re there because they’re women who are unwanted by society. its painful to watch people try to wokescold a movie that already knows and
addresses your point!

ALSO disabled women at that time were sent to become nuns so it’s possible her being there in the first place was involuntary! i have more thoughts but i def have to watch it again to get my head straight
this is a very shallow, very reactionary interpretation of the devils and embarrasses me as someone who likes ethel cain. was i wrong to assume she had something going on upstairs? im surprised how unwilling she is to engage with the movie/how deeply she misunderstands it
unavailable
dude, her humanity was never in question and you’re the one who brought it up while trying to temper your own seeming belief that she’s a genius 😭
look, i’m sorry i expressed mild disappointment in ethel cain’s shallow film analysis but i think
we’re all going to live.
ethel cain’s complaint about the devils is ironic to me bc *my* biggest complaint about the devils is that there isn’t enough focus on the nuns! no offense to oliver reed, but i am MUCH more interested in vanessa redgrave’s sister jeanne than i am in father grandier.

Finally the queen has arrived. “A spirit wholly opposed to the seriousness with which one ought to take the things of god, and that fostered in her a certain glee which destroys the compunction of heart indispensable to a perfect conversion to god” how can we not stan?!?!
