Check out this new paper by @cbgoodman and @leland_suzanne on special districts. My students always have lots of questions about special districts. If yours do too, consider assigning this next semester.
🚨New paper forthcoming in Local Government Studies with @leland_suzanne🚨 tl;dr granting cities more powers generally leads to fewer special districts, as their need to circumvent restrictive state laws is lessened. These results disappear in district subgroup analyses.

Voters in Gwinnett County, Georgia, voted to approve a measure creating the new city of Mulberry in northeastern Gwinnett. Voters will elect the five new city council members at the general election in November 2024.
In northeastern Gwinnett County, Georgia, voters will decide on a ballot measure today to create a new city called Mulberry. Mulberry would have around 41,245 residents. If approved, this would make Mulberry the 24th largest city in Georgia.

We're privileged to work with Kate, and even moreso to be able to publish her fantastic story on EC. Why is a cycling site publishing a story about auto racing? Because it's also about bike racing, and how power and wealth shape sports journalism.

Spent last night at a dinner with Economists from the National Association for Business Economics and the heads of the Statistical Agencies and various other groups c including the Federal Reserve. Most people do not understand how the official data on the U.S. economy is computed and the steps involved in ensuring it is both timely and accurate.

A study by @landpolicy on how much property taxes vary within cities. Here's a chart showing the diff btw taxes paid on newly purchased homes and homes owned the median length of time in that city. Thanks to Prop 13 and soaring real estate values, CA cities dominate the top 10.
