A rabbi's response to our President calling Jews "lacking knowledge and disloyal" if they vote Democratic: Rabbi Danny Maseng writes: As a Jew Since you called me out as a Jew, Mr. President, since you thought to call me disloyal or lacking knowledge by not voting for you, I’d like to respond to you personally, even though I have no illusions you will read this. As a Jew, Mr. President, I am commanded to love the stranger who dwells among us no less than thirty-six times in the Bible you claim to treasure. I am commanded to have one law for the stranger and the citizen. No exceptions. As a Jew, Mr. President, I am commanded to pay my employees on time, including undocumented workers at casinos, construction sites, or golf courses. As a Jew, I am commanded to repay bank loans and investors. As a Jew, I am commanded to never bear false witness. As a Jew, Mr. President, I am commanded to guard my tongue and speak no evil. As a Jew, Mr. President, I am commanded to never embarrass my fellow human being in public, lest I be accused of spilling their blood – including Ted Cruz or the late Senator and war hero, John McCain. As a Jew, Mr. President, I take great offense in my president attacking Denmark, a country that gallantly saved its Jews from the Nazis, while most of Europe fell asleep. As a Jew, Mr. President, I take umbrage in my Grandfather, the sainted Dr. Rabbi Harry S. Davidowitz, who inhaled poison gas in the trenches of WWI as a US Army chaplain, being called disloyal because he voted Democrat. As a Jew, born and raised in Israel, I take offense at you calling me disloyal to America AND to Israel because I oppose your inept, ghoulish, uncouth, deceitful, inhumane farce of leadership. How many tours of duty have you performed for Israel during wartime? Or, for that sake, the USA? As a Jew, Mr. President, I reserve the right to oppose Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib (neither of whom called upon the help of a former KGB operative to help them in their election to office), while simultaneously condemning your divisive, racist rants and policies. As a Jew who has proud Republican family members who I love and cherish, I am ashamed of what you have done to the Republican party; to conservative ideals – even if I do not share all of those ideals. As a Jew whose Christian uncle fought heroically at the Battle of the Bulge for our country and for the salvation of Europe – I am ashamed by the mockery you visit upon his sacrifice. As the son of a Christian pilot, later converted to Judaism, who led American pilots to glorious victory over Nazi Germany, I am outraged by your embrace of neo-Nazi’s and racists in America (that same pilot, who became a squadron commander in the Israeli Air Force, and fought for Israel’s independence). As a Jew, I am disgraced by your fawning adoration of the worst dictators of our century – you violate Christian and Jewish values by doing so. As a Jew; as a well-informed Jew who loves and cares deeply for Israel and for America, I condemn you and call you out for the divisive fool, the ogre, the ghoul that you are. May my soul not enter your council, let me not join your assembly.

The City of Glendale, California, has deployed 200 grazing goats to clear dry vegetation and reduce wildfire fuel in high-risk zones. Now in their fifth year of service, the goats provide a natural and effective solution for managing steep, hard-to-reach terrain.

May 5, 1945. Hitler has been dead for five days. The war in Europe is almost over. In a castle in the Austrian Alps, American soldiers, German soldiers, and a group of elderly French prisoners grab rifles and get ready to fight the SS. Together. The castle was called Schloss Itter. The Nazis had turned it into a prison for very important people. Not ordinary prisoners. Trophies. Inside were two former prime ministers of France, Paul Reynaud and Édouard Daladier. Two of France's top generals, Maxime Weygand and Maurice Gamelin. A famous tennis champion, Jean Borotra. And the older sister of Charles de Gaulle. As the Reich collapsed in early May, the SS guards panicked and ran. The prisoners suddenly found themselves in charge of a castle, with weapons left behind, and a serious problem. Waffen-SS units were still roaming the area. Fanatics who would gladly kill them all. They needed help. Fast. One of the castle's prisoners, a Yugoslav handyman, slipped out on a bicycle to find the Americans. Separately, a German army officer named Major Josef Gangl also went looking for them. Gangl was a Wehrmacht officer who had turned against the Nazis and was secretly working with the Austrian resistance. He wanted to protect the prisoners too. He found an American tank commander named Captain Jack Lee. Lee was 27, tough, cigar chewing, and willing to do something insane. With a single Sherman tank and a handful of American soldiers, he drove up into the mountains alongside Gangl and a few of his German troops. They reached the castle on May 4. The French prisoners were not exactly thrilled to see a tiny rescue force. They had expected an army. Instead they got a few Americans, a few Germans, and one tank. The next morning, the SS attacked. Somewhere between 100 and 150 Waffen-SS troops hit the castle with machine guns, mortars, and anti-tank weapons. The defenders fought back from the walls and windows. Americans and Germans side by side. The French prisoners refused to hide. Some of them, including Reynaud, picked up weapons and joined in. The Sherman tank was knocked out. The defenders were running out of ammunition. It looked like the castle would fall. Then Jean Borotra, the tennis star, volunteered to make a run for it. He jumped the wall, slipped past the SS, and sprinted through the countryside to find American reinforcements. He found them. And he insisted on coming back with them to finish the fight. During the battle, Major Gangl saw Paul Reynaud exposed to gunfire and moved to pull him to safety. A sniper shot Gangl dead. He had survived the whole war as a German soldier, only to die defending French prisoners from the SS in its final days. That afternoon, the American relief force arrived and broke the attack. The SS were scattered and captured. The prisoners were saved. Jack Lee received the Distinguished Service Cross. In Austria, Josef Gangl is remembered as a hero, and a street is named after him. It is believed to be the only battle of the war where American and German soldiers fought together on the same side.

I had the honor of meeting Yostena Makram Donahue, whose breast cancer journey truly broke my heart. ❤️🎀 At just 33 years old, Yostena was diagnosed with Stage 1B breast cancer—the exact same age her sister was when she passed away from Stage 4 breast cancer. Imagine receiving the same diagnosis that took your sister’s life, at the very age you lost her. Yostena had also lost her mother and two aunts to ovarian cancer. Thankfully, because she learned at 18 that she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation and stayed on top of her screenings, doctors caught her cancer early. But her journey was far from easy. She underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and fertility preservation, and was unable to work for six months. Today, she’s on medication that has placed her in medically induced menopause, with another possible surgery ahead. 💔 What touched me most was hearing that when Yostena received her diagnosis, her first thought was her two-year-old son. After losing her own mother and sister to cancer, she couldn’t help but wonder what the future would hold for her little boy. Through it all, Yostena has leaned on her faith, her husband, and her loved ones to keep going. Her story is a heartbreaking reminder of how much cancer can take from a family, but also how important early detection and knowing your genetic risks can be. Yostena has already lost so many people she loves to cancer. Now she’s doing everything she can to be here for the people who love her. Please keep Yostena and her family in your prayers. 🙏🏾❤️🎀

Looks like this front is shaping up to be the first "real" fall front of the season🍂 The front is expected to pass over our region on Friday, bringing cooler, drier, and breezier weather. Hazardous marine conditions are likely with this frontal passage. Mariners, stay safe!
