I spoke with @NoraEGordon about the harms of teacher layoffs and why the design of teacher layoff policies matter.

The College-in-3 trend is accelerating. Early movers experimenting with a 3 year bachelor’s degree were less selective schools like Merrimack or Weber State. Then states like OH, OK, and KS told their flagship universities to pilot the 90 credit degree. Now even NYU is doing it.

The answer is that the licensure tests do seem to both limit supply and, in some cases, predictive. A few thoughts:
1) Policymakers sometimes treat it as a problem if the tests limit supply, but isn't that part of the theory of action for having them?
2/n
2) The licensure tests (particularly the new Science of Reading exam) predict teacher effectiveness. I've also studied licensure tests that don't predict much. We need to get more nuanced about these tests and what's on them to make them better!
3/n
It's also worth thinking through how the issue of licensure testing is related to the broader issue of state mandates: xitter.cf/CEDR_US/status/2112999…

Solo Mike tackles what is perhaps the most fundamental question in ed (or any) policy: how much to delegate to the next level down. I have a few thoughts about this 👇

I believe when teacher evaluation roles around again (I believe and hope it will), we will do it better based on what we've learned. This reminds me to say, this paper on implementation is worth reading: edworkingpapers.com/ai26-160…

Lastly, the episode also talked about a new terrific paper on teacher licensure tests (a state mandate!), which is worth a close look!

This episode has an Amber's Research Minute that sings to me! She covers this very good @andrew_avit paper on licensure tests, whether they predict teacher effectiveness and limit teacher supply:

Since I'm not living in a cave, I'm worried about AI (for a host of reasons), there are some smart folks out there that think AI is not likely to have as dramatic effects on the workforce as many think it might (but will we be here?).
