Free Spain! by Albert Camus, born today in 1913.
'... since the fall of Barcelona, there has existed in the most intimate part of us an absence, a void, a waiting. In a world that calls itself liberated, we turn our gaze to that country, because it speaks to us of injustices+regrets (1946)

90 years ago today, Madrid awoke to find the government had fled as the battle for the city began in the Civil War.
Before the Int. Brigades' arrival, it was workers' militias who held the line. 400 hairdressers with 150 rifles were left to hold their positions at the Casa de Campo lake against Franco's professional and brutal army.
As Almudena Grandes wrote:
"It was November 6, 1936, and Madrid was alone, left to its own devices with its children, with its fate as a lost city - condemned, abandoned to its fate... Whe next day came, the bakers didn’t bake bread, the bricklayers didn’t lay bricks, the teachers didn’t open the schools, and the barbers didn’t shave anyone. Not even themselves, because even before dawn they were already at their posts in the Casa de Campo. They were barbers and hairdressers, not soldiers, but [Franco's] regular troops couldn’t make them retreat a single inch - not even at the cost of half of them being slaughtered. It was November 7, 1936, and Madrid smiled with lead in its belly.
They were bakers, bricklayers, teachers, barbers, and two days earlier, most of them didn’t even know how to fire a rifle. But if they hadn’t exercised their heroic and sovereign will, the 8th would never have dawned for the International Brigades to march down Calle Atocha, and the reinforcements of the 9th and the 10th would never have arrived."

🇷🇸 Top Serbian police chief and Vučić loyalist arrested, a week after the Student List's election win
Marko Kričak, head of Serbia's Criminal Police Directorate, was arrested in Belgrade this morning together with Boško Sekulović, head of the Service for Suppression of Crime.
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade ordered the arrests over their alleged unlawful conduct in the "Senjak" murder case, including the beating of suspects during police interrogations. The case was opened after lawyers for former Belgrade police chief Veselin Milić accused the two of trying to pin a restaurant murder on him.
Kričak built his career under Aleksandar Vučić, rising from the BIA intelligence agency to head the unit protecting officials, and then the criminal police. Vučić repeatedly praised him in public as a fighter "without fear or blemish."
Formally, the new government had nothing to do with this. The Student List won the October 25 election, but a new government hasn't even been formed yet, and it's still unclear who will lead it. The movement ran without a clear leader or a prime ministerial candidate. The arrests were ordered by prosecutors acting on a criminal complaint.
But the timing says a lot. For years, people close to Vučić were considered untouchable, and complaints against them could sit in a drawer forever. One week after Vučić conceded defeat, his favourite police chief is in handcuffs. Two days ago, the central bank shut down Alta banka, owned by a businessman seen as close to Vučić's party. It was also one of the few Serbian banks that served Russians when many others turned them away, and thousands of Russians living in Serbia now have their money frozen.
