In 2012, when I was the US ambassador to Russia, Putin shut down USAID inside Russia. Why? Because their work supported free markets, democracy, human rights —ie causes that threatened Putins dictatorship. Shutting down USAID is exactly what autocrats all over the world want.
X is more and more a cesspit for MAGA followers and other unsavory people.
Many serious academics, politicians and other people still have their audiences here, but for how long? The reputation risk of having a presence at this platform is increasing rapidly.

Nu roar sig vissa med att friskt dela bilder på andra än Musk med höjd arm. En del gör det dock för att försöka argumentera för att Musk inte agerat klandervärt. Det är antingen inte genomtänkt, eller klandervärt.

Donald Trump has no problem with violent criminals on the streets, he just want them to be his loyal violent criminals.
Mr Trump encourages people to show their worst behavior, to act on not what makes a society good, but petty, selfish and even cruel. Some feel empowered by this, others appalled. The good news is that kindness and compassion becomes an act of resistance.

Yes, an oligarchy of billionaires running the country would be (and is) bad news. But history, especially from Africa, Latin America and former Soviet Republics, shows that even worse would be an autocrat weakening institutions and controlling the oligarchs as well as the state apparatus. We have a lot to worry about.
