How Doom changed the world.
In 1991 I worked on the game Command HQ with Dan Bunten, who later became Danielle Berry. ANYWAY, Command HQ is of historical importance, because as near as I can tell, it was the first real-time strategy game. Dan thought that since 65% of gamers had modems it would mostly be played head-to-head. It bombed. I think it had about 40,000 sales.
Later I went to id Software and got to work on Doom. We all agreed at id that it was unlikely anyone would ever play Deathmatch, except in very small numbers. After all zero games had a robust head-to-head experience, and my personal time with Command HQ just hammered home the point.
However, everyone at id loved Deathmatch, so we kept it in the game. We figured, even if no one else played it, WE could keep doing it.
We were entirely wrong. I don't know if Doom's Deathmatch exploded because there were more networks to play on, or if Doom was so compelling everyone had to try it, or if a critical mass of modems had finally been reached. Maybe it was because Doom was a hit with the college kids, all of whom had ready access to networks.
Anyway, Deathmatch skyrocketed and that's what made Doom famous really. We were by no means the first first-person shooter. But we were the first game to make the player-vs-player model universal.
Today, a game that DOESN'T have a PvP has to explain why. I am extremely proud of that, even if it wasn't entirely our doing.

This account is disputed by DOOM's director John Romero, who states id Software predicted Deathmatch to be a highly popular game mode in a press release months before Sandy joined the team.

>67% of players play male V
>Male V completly removed from the game cover since 2023
>Fortnite Cyberpunk 2077 collab only had female V
>all the promotional material heavily favours female V
Something is not adding up here

Biggest mystery to me with this whole Ethan Klein H3h3 stuff is who tf was watching this shit?
It started with using a rare fugtrup mei as my pfp because I need me a chubby Chinese girl, stat. And then they released the ghost bride skin so I finally tried Overwatch. And now I'm in love for real and need to be good at this game.

£4.30 for lamb kofte and chips at Wrexham.
Can't fault the price. The presentation, on the other hand, needs a serious rethink.

Chris Avellone (Planescape, KOTOR 2, and Fallout: New Vegas) just dropped a MEGATON NUKE regarding BioWare's hiring practices...
"...when applicants would apply to the studio, the producer would go through their LinkedIn to see what posts they liked, and if he disagreed with their political/social Like, he'd advocate not to hire them based on their Like."
ITS TRUE. EVERYTHING WE'VE BEEN SAYING. ITS ALL TRUE.
HOLY SHIT!

That’s cause Cavill gives a shit about his work… and the dumbfuck writers of the Witcher hated him for it.
Karen Gillan, who is a Highlander, says Henry Cavill's Scottish accent in the Highlander reboot is absolutely "bang on"
She also says he was so dedicated to authenticity, he was even correcting people who were mispronouncing Gaelic words
