#ThoughtForTheDay Two things I have learned throughout my career as an educator, Students, like adults, want to be treated fairly & believe that we care about them. I mean truly care about them, even when they let us down. Let's not make it about us. #Culturize

Today students captioned “memes” in ELA! The catch? Each caption had to follow a specific grammar rule or include a grammar component. I’ve never heard so many giggles while practicing grammar. 😍😍🙌🏻

1. Take any normal worksheet with review questions. 2. Cut the sheet into slips. 3. Hide those slips in plastic eggs. Teams collect and egg at random then race back to their team compete to solve as many as they can before time expires! Rinse and repeat. #EDrenaline

Sometimes when reflecting on your practices, the question is as simple as - would you want to be a student in your classroom?

Yes! So many times we think using good writing to teach good writing is cheating. I say show me one author who sat in isolation and wrote a five paragraph essay that people cared about and appreciated. #notcopying #notcheating #letthemwrite

Some have asked to see my poetry tournament brackets for my seniors this year. Thanks to @pennykittle and her former colleague, Joe Ferneld, for this idea.

Allow students to re-read. Toddlers and preschoolers love to reread favorites. We do something at school that makes students hate to reread. How many times to teachers tell students to put a book back because they have already read it? -Doug Fisher #CRESTReads #KellerLiteracy – at Austin, TX
