These tariffs are unnecessary, punitive, and a profound mistake. They will push our core European allies further away while doing nothing to advance U.S. national security.
We are already seeing the consequences of these measures in real time: our NATO allies are being forced to divert attention and resources to Greenland, a dynamic that plays directly into Putin’s hands by threatening the stability of the strongest coalition of democracies the world has ever seen.
Congress must work together to reassert our Constitutional authority over tariffs so that they are not weaponized in ways that harm our alliances and undermine American leadership.

The Yale Budget Lab closely monitors the price effects of all US #tariffs and foreign retaliation implemented this year. As of mid-August, the Lab estimates that US consumers will face an overall average effective tariff rate of 18.6%, the highest since 1933. The price increase from all 2025 tariff rises amounts to an average per household income loss of US$2,700. Sixteen Thais who were deceived by a scam center and detained in Myawaddy, Myanmar, have been rescued and safely returned to Thailand through the Mae Sot–Myawaddy border crossing in Tak Province.
According to Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the operation was carried out in close coordination between the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon, the Office of the Police Attaché, the Royal Thai Police, and the Naresuan Task Force.
The 16 victims had been lured to work in a scam operation in the Shwe Kokko–Myawaddy area. Following their return, they were screened under the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) to determine whether they were victims of human trafficking. Those identified as victims will receive protection and assistance from relevant agencies.
The rescue came after civil society groups petitioned for help.
