Very happy that the long, long, long, long, long overdue day when the published results of all @NIH funded research is immediately freely available to everyone who can benefit from it. Kudos to the @NIH for making this happen, and eternal curses to the scientific societies, publishers and research 'leaders' who spent 30 years wielding their influence to block this, for the immeasurable harm to scientific progress and public trust in science they have wrought.
NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya has announced that the NIH Public Access Policy, originally slated to go into effect on 12/31/25 will now be effective 7/1/25. Read more in his statement: bit.ly/4jTQI4O

NEW: The New York Times published an op-ed blasting scientists and government officials for covering up evidence that COVID-19 likely originated from a gain-of-function lab leak. Five years too late. The piece condemns Francis Collins, Anthony Fauci, Peter Daszak, Jeremy Farrar, Kristian Andersen, the authors of the Proximal Origin paper, and EcoHealth Alliance for publishing deceptive studies labeling the lab leak theory a conspiracy, even while privately admitting: "The lab escape version of this is so friggin' likely to have happened because they were already doing this type of work and the molecular data is fully consistent with that scenario." The op-ed delivers an ominous warning: This ongoing cover-up and denial mean that dangerous gain-of-function experiments, the exact kind of research that likely created COVID-19, are still happening right now in inadequately secured labs, quietly endorsed by the scientific establishment. It's not a question of if, but when, the next deadly virus escapes. Remember when the NYT would call you a misinformation spreader, and social media platforms would ban you for believing COVID-19 originated in a lab?

I despise writing in the passive voice to try and blunt the message. So I rewrote the NYTimes headline for it. Yes, Covid came from a lab. Yes, Fauci and many prominent Western virologists conspired to hide that from the public. No, nobody has been arrested.

A miracle has happened. The NY Times ran an oped acknowledging not only that the covid virus likely originated in a lab, but that government officials and scientists conspired to keep the substantiating evidence secret. The lab leak theory was censored on social media because of "pressure from the administration ... we shouldn't have done it."

Today #NIH is terminating more than $250 million in funding—including more than 400 grants—to Columbia University following directives from the Trump Administration’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. The cancellations are due to Columbia University’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.

I remember arguing with academics here during COVID with no insight into the consequences of lockdowns to small business owners. Many businesses never reopened, and others faced criminal prosecution for defying public health orders. Time to understand what “we’re all in this together” actually means.
Cutting NIH to save budget is like cutting the front lobe of brain to lose weight. It’s <1% of body weight yet it governs reasoning and problem solving functions of the brain, basically determining how smart you are. Dumb move to send IT kids to do your brain surgery, America.

Exactly right. A bio PhD in America is a ponze scheme closer to Bernie metoff than a real chance of a career.
It’s a big problem that the top bio PhD programs in America cannot attract the top American undergrads vs Goldman Sachs, Google, or a dental school. They can attractive top undergrads from China because the promise of a green card. But how much longer will this go on?

Springer Nature earns a revenue of ~$2b a year, with wide profit margins built on a model that charges scientists $10k+ of taxpayer dollars per article in their flagship journals, retains the copyright, and then charges institutions and the taxpayer to access the research. A model generalizable to academic publishers broadly. the govt is destroying science rn yes but Nature’s and others been doing their part for a while
About a month after Donald Trump took office as the 47th US president, almost all grant-review meetings remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget. go.nature.com/4k8Njjx

Pitt to pause PhD admissions, following Vanderbilt and USC, because of uncertainty of NIH funding to academic universities. Who will teach and train US scientists for pharma and biotech? Should we import them from countries that do? wesa.fm/health-science-tech/…

Congrats to you Perla! Another PhD in a successful industry job. I love when she says “I still don’t believe it”. Common reaction when you finally get into your dream job after years of being undervalued as a PhD. It only takes one “yes” to get hired! #phdchat

Ignored for being "overqualified"? Talk more about your transferable skills and less about your niche skills. The more education, experience and skills you have, the more you need to lean into transferable skills. Don't be confused by the simplicity of this. #phd #overqualified

This is quickly becoming more than just a biotech issue lol It just occurred to me, that big universities will probably jack up tuition rates too, to make for lost NIH funding

Institutional funding at the NIH is being cut by 75%. You will be shocked to learn just how many jobs will be lost in your own state. Just click your state on the map. unitedformedicalresearch.org…

Per SUNY Chancellor NIH reduction in funds will cost SUNY system $79 million in current grants, including $21 million in next 5 months. If this isn’t reversed the effect on universities, public and private, and vital—literally life-saving—research, will be unfathomably bad.
