The executive order to allow on farm processing didn’t happen, so next week @chelliepingree and I will be introducing legislation to allow sales of meat directly to consumers from small farmers who process a limited number of animals on their farms.

The man behind Trump today was @FarmBureau lobbyist Zippy Duvall who OPPOSES mandatory country of origin labeling, wants to MANDATE RFID tags for cattle, defends the CORRUPT check-off program that takes money from farmers, & SUPPORTS beef regulations that block small processors.

Article mentions the necessity of the PRIME Act to empower regulatory changes that @chelliepingree and I have cosponsored for many years.

The issue isn’t with processing. There isn’t some law that prevents a farmer from processing their own animals.
The issue is they can’t sell individual cuts of meat that they process.
All Trump has to do is endorse the Prime Act to actually fix this issue once and for all, but instead he will issue another meaningless executive order and pretend he fixed something he doesn’t even understand.

Trump, after intense backlash from farmers and ranchers over his new beef import plans, says he’s drawing up legal docs to allow farmers “to process their own food”
Ironically, it’s @RepThomasMassie @chelliepingree who have similar legislation in Congress — to allow farmers to sell beef etc directly to local buyers by exempting small local processing and slaughter facilities from mandatory federal USDA inspection requirements (if they meet other standards). Lawmakers believe this has to be done via Congress.
Lots of anger among farmers and ranchers still over Trump’s latest plan to import some beef - which GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (who is up for reelection) and other Rs have warned the WH for months it would harm US farmers.

Rep. @chelliepingree (D-ME) on whether the United States should abolish ICE: "Absolutely."
"We do not need an agency that is extremely overfunded, poorly run…all to meet the whims of a White House's quotas on changing the face of immigration in this country."

Maine consistently has one of the lowest crime rates in the U.S. So what is ICE doing there?

Last week, when I visited Dilley with @chelliepingree, we witnessed horrific conditions firsthand.
I’m grateful Olivia is finally back home. Chellie and her team did an incredible job bringing attention to this case and helping secure her release. Olivia and her family are asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who had been living in Portland, where Olivia was a 1st year nursing student.
While we still have so much work ahead of us to fight Trump’s cruel immigration policies, this is exactly why we keep fighting.
Late last night, Olivia Andre returned home to Maine.
After six long months locked away in Dilley in violation of federal law, she is finally reunited with her family, friends, and a community that welcomes her with open arms.
We fought like hell to make this happen. And we will continue to fight until every child, every family, every person is released and the Dilley Trailer Prison is shutdown for good.
