The NYT’s @germanrlopez says Denver proves we “know how to fix homelessness,” and that the answer is police plus shelter. I read @urbaninstitute evaluation he cites. It doesn’t say that. 🧵1/ nytimes.com/2026/10/13/opini….

9/ His “next phase,” coerced treatment and more low-level policing, comes with zero evidence. Urban’s own Denver randomized trial found the reverse: supportive housing cut homelessness-related arrests by more than half.

10/ Credit where due: the best scenes in the piece are the tiny homes and hotel rooms where people finally felt safe. That’s the lesson of Denver: quality shelter plus exits to housing. The cops are the least-supported part of the story.

In June, a woman named Stephenie reached out to @propublica. An outreach worker told her we were reporting on cities conducting sweeps of homeless encampments, and she had a story to tell. 🧵

Yesterday millions of tenants forked over the majority of their paychecks to their landlords. For many, it’s more money than they’ve ever paid for the worst conditions they’ve ever endured. I can tell you one thing for sure: the proposals listed here don’t speak to them at all.

Despite highs in the 90s and 100s for the next several days, our councilmember @CW_HeatherHutt has scheduled four Ktown sweeps tomorrow. The city is opening emergency cooling centers, but people can't go to them because they have to move everything they own for the sweep.

Housing affordability is a central theme in this presidential campaign. Historic. A reflection of both the severity of the housing crisis *and* of the powerfully effective advocacy by impacted people & their allies demanding solutions. Onward!

794 vacant permanent supportive housing units (nearly 10% of SFs social housing for homeless) is shameful, but especially during this brutal police crackdown. However, the reason they aren’t rushing to fill them is b/c officials know it’s not nearly enough sfstandard.com/opinion/2024/…
