AUSTIN MAN gets turned away from a CapMetro bus after he tried to hit the driver, then accosts a man riding an e-bike down the sidewalk, pulls him off, grabs his backpack, and throws punches when the man chases him to get it back -- sending the victim to the hospital, five months after he punched a stranger in the head at another Austin bus stop and walked away with credit for time served. The victim in the recent attack left in an ambulance. Police found more than 5 grams of meth in John Swain's pocket. Swain told the officer that if he had really swung first, he would have knocked the man out and "taken his backpack and taken his bike." The officer wrote that he'd dealt with Swain "on many occasions." Prosecutors know him well too, but don’t prosecute him. In 2024, Swain was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony. DA José Garza's office let him plead down to misdemeanor assault. In November 2025, state troopers found meth in his tent downtown and he resisted arrest. Garza's office never filed the drug charge. County Attorney Delia Garza's office declined the resisting arrest charge. In April, he was arrested stumbling drunk and screaming obscenities at people outside the downtown library, where he was already banned. Twelve days later he was shirtless on Congress Ave, blocking traffic and confronting strangers while diners on restaurant patios called 911. That case was dismissed. In May, he walked up to a stranger sitting at a bus stop on Guadalupe, punched him in the head, and pedaled away from police on a pink bicycle. The officer knew him of course and chased him, calling him by his first name. Swain was charged only with evading. He bonded out and skipped court. When police finally brought him back, he got credit for time served.

James Talarico: “We’ve all been focused on the wrong 1%. You heard a lot about trans people in this race, they’re 1% of the population. You’ve heard about Muslims in this race from Republicans, they’re 1% of the population. Even undocumented immigrants are 1% of the population. We are focused on the wrong 1% because the only minority destroying America is the billionaire class and it’s time that we tax them, make them pay their fair share so we can invest in education and healthcare”

Is Abbott really this desperate? I don't get it.

The city of Austin has taken the liberty of misrepresenting “Prop i” on its website So we had a smart lawyer-type man mark it up to ensure its correctness. Integrity and honesty are important. So is transparency.

#MedTwitter have you been following what @LAzzaliniMD is doing? He’s sharing some really smart advice for intelligently & strategically managing assets. Follow along!
Rank your debts by after-tax interest rate, not by balance. Student loan at 6.5%. Car loan at 7.9%. Mortgage at 3%. The payoff order writes itself. Emotion wants the biggest balance gone first. The math disagrees.

Physicians read hemodynamic tracings. Executives read P&Ls. Almost none of us read our own balance sheet. Here is how I think about it, and why it matters more than your income 🧵

D8 candidate Jeffery Bowen just posted a literal contract with the district. Exact commitments. No hedging. He is asking voters to hold him to it. Same spirit as Prop I: measure results, demand accountability, stop writing blank checks. Early voting is open NOW. This race is close. Vote for Bowen in District 8.
My contract with District 8 - hold me accountable district8dispatch.substack.c… Anyone else game ?

Austin’s status quo has already failed us. Higher costs, stalled projects, developer-first priorities, and more of the same for a decade. This is the chance to stop it. Vote against the Status Quo Slate — Amber Goodwin, José Velásquez, Ryan Alter, Selena Xie, and Zo Qadri. Our city can do better than the last ten years
Meet the Status Quo Slate of Austin City Council candidates. If you want more of the last decade - Project Connect, developer-first density, restorative justice, social spending that never reaches the people who need it, and audits that favor unions - these are your candidates.

Two investors. Same $1M portfolio. Same 8% pre-tax return. 25 years. One ends with $6.1M. The other with $4.3M. The difference is not stock picking. It is tax drag. A thread on the most underrated number in a high earner's financial life 🧵

Austin voters will see a ballot measure for Prop I this year. As a former @austintexasgov employee, I recommend you vote in favor. I remember being part of meetings where $50,000 expenditures were made with little due diligence because that was just loose change in the City's couch cushions. Help hold the City of Austin accountable to the taxpayer with an outside audit. vimeo.com/1236104700/61a43d4…

An independent audit of the city budget is not the same as a black box organization that went around destroying things.

Eager to see more!
Something different from me this fall. For years I have watched brilliant colleagues earn a lot and keep surprisingly little. I have spent a long time studying why. Over the next weeks I will share what I learned about tax, investing and estate planning, one idea at a time.

Why Austin voters stopped trusting City Hall with their money - and want Proposition I. 1. 67 of 151 annual performance expectations by hired vendors were missed. 2. $1.08 million for a new Austin city logo. 3. Austin government staff could not provide requirements/needs for >half of "consulting contracts". 4. ~150 solo lunches charged to a City card. 5. ~$980,000 in fraudulent vendor transactions from a single employee. saveaustinnow.com
