My company, Newfound Research, turned 15 today. Coming up on this anniversary, I reflected quite a bit on my career.ย  Iโ€™m not sure why, but this milestone feels larger than I would've expected. So I decided to write something. 15 Ideas, Frameworks, and Lessons from 15 Years

AI will write the newsletter. AI will read and summarize the newsletter. Eventually, someone will stop pretending there is a human in the middle and eliminate both the design and the need to communicate in English. It'll just be a machine-oriented payload of 1s and 0s.
As of a month ago, I started having AI sort my inbox every 5 minutes, including collecting all the newsletters and summarizing them into a master newsletter every morning. Been fantastic for me. Not great for the newsletter business.

A think an under-appreciated characteristic of @chameleon_jeff is that he's very well spoken. He explains complex topics clearly. He also explains them quite succinctly. With no uhh's or umm's. It's a genuine skill.

Me: What about alternatives on your platform? Them: We've seen a big uptick in their adoption! Mostly private equity and private credit. Me: I always forget that "private" is a synonym for "alternative" Them: ... Me: I mean, it's clearly not the "equity" or "credit" part...

Compounding Through Risk, Not Return (S7E35) In this episode, I speak with @pmaymin and Allan Maymin, co-Heads of Global Asset Allocation at Janus Henderson. Philip and Allan run the asset allocation group founded at Janus Henderson by Nobel laureate Myron Scholes more than a decade ago, and they've arrived there by wonderfully different routes โ€” Philip through LTCM, academia, and behavioral analytics; Allan through high-frequency trading, derivatives, and prop desks. At the heart of their process is a simple but subversive idea. As Philip put it in our pre-call, "people live in an average return world, and they ought not." What matters to investors is compound growth โ€” and they believe that the surest way to improve compounding isn't chasing higher returns, it's managing risk. Drawdowns destroy compounding and avoiding them is the more tractable lever. They connect theory to practice through the options market. Calls and puts embed the market's collective, forward-looking view of risk, making them one of the richest sources of information available to an asset allocator. We discuss how they extract those signals and propagate them across more than 4,000 assets to build portfolios around client objectives rather than benchmarks. Please enjoy my conversation with Philip and Allan Maymin.

At a recent ETF conference one of the issuers said they are considering filing an ETF that tracks Pokรฉmon cards, which raises the q: are collectibles the next frontier for ETFs? Donโ€™t count it out IMO. The ETF can handle a lot l, even illiquid things, albeit as a hybrid CEF. Via Griffin Kelly @TheDailyUpside

In this market, your long-only active equity manager is basically being forced to spend a lot of tracking error budget on an uncompensated factor bet (size).
One of the main reasons so many breadth indicators are off the charts is because the concentration in the index is like nothing we've ever experienced. The top 5 stocks in the S&P 500 are equal to the bottom 434. (67-500)
