The urban scarecrow is the last folk art of the empire. He descends, through many generations, from the colonial bureaucrat: once stood in khaki on a Bengal platform supervising the construction of a railway, he now stands in hi-vis in Croydon, supervising a hole
The most third world thing about London is the loads of people wearing coloured vests who’s jobs primarily consist of standing around doing nothing.

The great unwashed in the flat beneath me are screeching like birds after a lightning strike knocked out the power. Their forefathers have never been more disappointed.

its obviously not *good* but admittedly having a private key of *4* as a globally trusted cert authority is one of the funniest bits of all time
For the next few days or weeks, anyone now has a root CA thanks to eMudhra. Time to have some fun with MiTMing unwilling devices!

Sadly, California is the only state in the union that prohibits insurers from pricing based on how people actually drive. So in Tesla's largest US market, the state prevents Tesla from giving heavy FSD users the insurance discount their lower risk warrants. The result: @CDInews, under @ICRicardoLara, taxes road users who actively use life-saving technology to subsidize those more likely to kill or maim.
Tesla is now giving Tesla Insurance cost estimates directly in the FSD section on the vehicle ordering page in U.S. states where Tesla Insurance is available. “Use FSD, save up to $60/mo on Tesla Insurance.”

It comes across as very out of touch when student alt type complains about tech workers in SF... it's like going to pittsburgh and being disappointed that the average steel worker isn't sufficiently cool and bohemian.

'house rules' appears to be the latest LLM-ism - I can't quite put a finger on why, but it's clear this is a more exaggerated term laying along the same vector as 'smoke test'

A few years ago, I managed to convince the creator of the TeamTNT malware (some German 16 year old) to quit while he was ahead. I wonder how he's doing now.

In striver circles, saying "I'm recruiting" now means "I'm looking for a job" Is this an esl/chinese grammar thing? Or is it a side effect of low literacy in tech? I think they discovered the word on LinkedIn and thought it sounded nice. I've heard it from so many people

I'll say it out loud: the fact that admissions officers now have to read heaps of AI slop is karma for inventing the worst genre ever and subjecting millions of kids to having to write in it.
The New York Times reports that AI is forcing colleges to pare down their admissions essays, which is great news. Having a counselor carefully polish your essay to dance to the exact tune admissions officers wanted was always bad, and never “authentic.” AI just lays it bare.
