“And we can no longer ignore the fact that we can’t sit down and wait for things to change. Because as long as they can keep their feet on our neck, they will always do it. But it’s time for us to stand up and be women and men.”

The editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes says the Pentagon fired him, along with the military newspaper’s publisher and a reporter.
Erik Slavin told The Associated Press on Friday that he was dismissed for insubordination after saying in an interview that any form of censorship would “constitute a red line.”
The newspaper is partly funded by the Pentagon but has a long history of editorial independence.
It was one of the first outlets to report on living conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln during the carrier’s extended deployment to the Middle East.

Happy 80th birthday to my friend George W. Bush!
Your friendship—and that of your father and your entire family—has been one of the great gifts of my life. It has always reminded me that long before we’re politicians, we’re fellow Americans and, above all, human beings.
And for the next month, I’m especially grateful to finally have someone older than me! Wishing you many more years of good health, happiness, and friendship.
Our country is stronger when we remember that what unites us is greater than what divides us.

More than 40 years ago, I arrived in Chicago in search of an idea. I was a young man looking for purpose, who believed deeply in America, was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and wanted to be a part of something larger. The America I believed in was one where everyone has opportunity, everyone is seen, everyone belongs—because that was an America that had a place for me, too.

As the first Latina character, Maria, on the popular children’s show @sesamestreet, Sonia Manzano has opened doors for the Latino community.
On this episode of SHE WAS FIRST on @PBS I enter with her into the South Bronx—a place @SoniaMManzano once longed to escape but now embraces for its cultural vibrancy and diversity.
Come with us as Sonia gives me a tour and a history lesson about her favorite borough.

The director of Netflix’s new true crime doc "The Perfect Neighbor" says she wanted to "flip body camera footage on its head" through the documentary:
"Police bodycam footage is usually used to surveil communities,” Gandbhir says. “It’s used to defend the police. For people of color and for vulnerable communities, it’s used to criminalize us. To dehumanize us. It’s a tool of surveillance, and I wanted to take it and flip it back, subverting it to show this beautiful community as it was before. Like really use the footage – and we shouldn’t have to do this – to humanize the people in that community."
