Dad, accountant, married to a medic

My wife started working as a doctor last month. Things I’ve learned so far: 1) interns are obsessed with learning how to “put in a line”. I am very veiny and my wife now stares at my hands like a rabid dog and says “I could get a grey in there”. More news as it comes in

I never put a comment on RIP.ie. I prefer to send a private note to people. After going through a bereavement last Thursday am, I cannot tell you much the RIP.ie comments have meant to us. Be in no doubt that families will read & cherish them.

The comments here 🥹. Proves my point about the comfort of supportive comments at a time like this. For all of you kind people asking, it was our Dad who passed away suddenly on Thursday 💙. He will get a wonderful send off tomorrow.

On Thursday night, after not eating all day, I went to the local Romayos (Carpenterstown). The woman at the til said to me when leaving, “you look really sad today, I hope you’re ok, I dropped a curry sauce in there for you, I know you like them”. That kindness was priceless.

There are few topics for a historical podcast that are more polarising than the Troubles. Harder still for the presenters to remain objective if they’re British or Irish. Kudos to @holland_tom & @dcsandbrook for their attempt to deliver a balanced summary over four episodes.

The 4 year old got a Frozen Lego set as a birthday present from his grandparents. It’s a beautiful Elsa castle, but he has 2 brothers, so it was destroyed in an attack by Thanos, and a giant snake ate Elsa and Anna. A death ray melted Olaf. Emotional scenes

For the first time in 75 years, the Sam Mcguire Cup comes home to Mayo, Ireland. I said it three years ago when I was in Ballina: Mayo for Sam! And I meant it. I said it because I know what it means not just the county of Mayo but to my own family’s story. Today, the dream becomes reality. Congratulations to my friends in Mayo. You earned this victory. Enjoy every minute. Sam is coming home ☘️

Nope! I always say there is no such thing as self-made. It’s a myth. It took millions of people - from my parents to mentors to friends to competitors to fans and voters - to write my success story. I did not write it alone. That’s the American Dream - not a lie about going it alone - but the truth that none of us do, and there is always someone with their hand out to lift us up.
this guy did everything for himself!

I'm reminded why I've barely tweeted in a while: Me: the Gardai did a good thing. Random fools: you must live in Ballsbridge (I don't), they didn't stop a murder, they're slow elsewhere, "you have time to post drivel" - from an idiot posting drivel.
Attempted break in at home tonight. Called @gardainfo at 120am. Patrol car here in less than 2 mins, did a patrol of the estate. Gardai then in the house taking statements and checking that everyone is safe a few minutes later. Outstanding stuff.

3yo: “Daddy, what did Bono lose?” Me: “what do you mean?” 3yo: “the song, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - what did he lose?” Me: “I don’t know” 3yo: “I think it’s sellotape”

Always felt @davidmcw was so informed & reliable but he said on his podcast that Johannesburg feels like Gotham, “out of a Marvel comic”. That level of DC vs Marvel inaccuracy is unbecoming of the man. I’m halfway through “Money” & now I don’t believe a word of it 😉

What an utterly disgraceful decision. Yet again, two fingers to doctors, two fingers to the babies in their care.

This is what happens when you buy the card for your wife at 955pm on the night before Valentine’s Day, and there is either this card or a “boyfriend” one. I think I’ve done a good job though, she mightn’t even notice.

The #NobelPeacePrize medal. It measures 6.6 cm in diameter, weighs 196 grams and is struck in gold. On its face, a portrait of Alfred Nobel and on its reverse, three naked men holding around each other’s shoulders as a sign of brotherhood. A design unchanged for 120 years. Did you know that some Nobel Peace Prize medals have been passed on after the award was given? A well‑known case is Dmitry Muratov’s medal, which was auctioned for over USD 100 million to support refugees from the war in Ukraine. And the medal displayed at the Nobel Peace Center is actually on loan and originally belonged to Christian Lous Lange, Norway’s first Peace Prize laureate. But one truth remains. As the Norwegian Nobel Committee states: “Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time.” A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel Peace Prize laureate cannot.

I am always amazed at some of the free stuff that people put on our neighbourhood whatsapp group. Then I am equally amazed when someone takes it. "Would anyone like this bird cage? The door is broken and there's a hole in it" "YES! I'll take it, exactly what I was looking for".
