On a walk, passing a playground.
Kid 1: Crying
Kid 2, consoling him:"I'm sorry you didn't get the lightning dragon"
I went for a walk yesterday. Some shitty sports betting app had plastered ads all over the sidewalk.
I removed every single one of 'em.
Me: "I want simple, high-quality health insurance."
Employers: "Here's a shitty app for career advice."
Hypothesis: a city spending on childcare might be good for its finances, if it keeps relatively high-earning families from leaving the city (and therefore the tax base).
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first “Parents’ Night Out” gave New York City parents free childcare for four hours on Aug. 16.
The NYC Parks program offered children ages 6 to 13 dinner and activities while their caregivers got time to themselves.
The NYTimes reported hat some parents went on dates or out to dinner, while others went home to relax, shopped or caught up on laundry.

Hey @Austin_Police you guys mind storing the pedestrian barriers for 6th street somewhere that's *not* in the middle of the bike lane?
This is on San Jacinto, just North of 6th. Been this way for months. Please correct it.
The year is 2006. You wake up on the couch - the TV's still playing.
It's on ABC Family. There's a commercial for a new show, "Kyle XY".
The plot?

Incredible article highlighting car-free and car-light Austinites!!!🚌🚲🚄
Traveling without a car is practical in many parts of the city - we should make it an option for more Austinites!
So grateful to Chelsey for writing this and all the folks who shared their story. 🙂
Can you live without a car in Austin? I do — but it takes some dedication. I wanted to hear from other carless or car-light Austinites about their experiences, so I talked to … 🧵

Ever wondered why you don't see buildings like this in Austin? One reason is our building code doesn't allow "single-stair" buildings, forcing builders into massive, inefficient designs. Staff is currently working to change this, but we need 5 big amendments to make it work 🏤 1/

ALT A photo of a lovely townhouse in Amsterdam, with 5 occupied floors, bikes parked in front of it, and green tramway tracks on the street in the foreground. The building is taller than it is wide, and the two entrances lead to spaces with access to a single means of egress each. If the building maintained access to two means of egress on each floor, the hallways would leave almost no space for rooms on a thin, shallow lot like this.

The staff draft of the single-stair apartment ordinance directed by #atxcouncil is a poison pill designed to prevent it from ever getting built, and is justified by lazy, absurd logic. A failure of duty at best, bordering on insubordination. An embarrassing day for City staff.
The last thing that they throw against the single-stair wall to see what sticks is always mass shootings. We have enough of those in America that we’re doing nothing about, do we really need to make up fake ones to worry about? services.austintexas.gov/edi…
Austin needs more spaces like this 🙂
Amazing activation of Plaza Saltillo for the Asian Night Market by @AsianChamberATX and the Lunar Foundation.
We need *more* transit hubs with vendors, food, and fun 🙂

This is a bad paper.
It does not investigate the causal relationship between upzoning and construction of new homes at all, but claims to refute it.
All it actually proves is that land use under current zoning is not 100.00% efficient.
News flash: it never will be.
“Upzoning,” or allowing for more multifamily home development, may not lead to more housing, a new study from Prof. @RichSchragger and @UVALawLibrary’s Sarah New reveals. The pair examined development in Charlottesville. law.virginia.edu/news/202405…
