excellent news on skin cancer, and perhaps for cancer in general. mRNA vaccines are turning out to be some of the best things humans have invented; crazy how politics led many people to freak out about them. washingtonpost.com/health/20…

Australia is at a crossroads. We can either drift into a divided society with stagnant real incomes or make the difficult decisions needed to lift productivity and restore growth. The ALP can't even see the issue, let alone fix it. Vote them out in 2028. afr.com/policy/economy/alban…

A common sign that you are in an insane millenarian death cult is that you axiomatically convinced that the Apocalypse will happen within a few months, you are constantly on the lookout for signs that it may have started, you feel both fearful and *excited* about it, and you're constantly talking about it with your friends, who happen to *all* have the exact same set of beliefs.

This in @Quillette is excellent on France in 2026 "French schools are no more “underfunded” than Dutch, German, Austrian or British ones, and spending per pupil has actually increased slightly in real terms over the past ten years." ~ @K_Niemietz quillette.com/2026/10/21/fra…

I don't have a strong view on whether Holmes should be in prison or not. But I think its fascinating how our culture(s) oscillate between the social norms of gender equality & the social norms of chivalry. This argument is an example of the latter xitter.cf/TheFP/status/211261250…

Some stats on #php2shell. In the 10 hours before it was publicly announced, across the @Cloudflare network we saw thousands of attempts to exploit it. That jumped to tens of thousands in the 45 minutes post announcement, hundreds of thousands within 2 hours, and millions now.

France’s protesters are rioting against austerity that doesn’t exist. Macron might as well give them the real thing, writes @K_Niemietz. quillette.com/2026/10/21/fra…

**How it affects you.** You do not run PHP. The websites you use do. Big names will fix it tonight. The risk is the small, forgotten places: the local business site, the old forum, the little clinic portal nobody has updated in years.
Guys this PHP bug is bad. Real bad. If you're not afraid yet, you should be. I can only speak for our own startup, but already at knowbooks dot com we've seen: - 100% of our cookies exposed - entire source code stolen - hackers defacing our site on their own servers - founders doxxed - important legal docs leaked We've traced all hacks to this command: git clone https:///github.com/breck7/knowbooks.com If some people are telling you not to panic about this, remember, trust no one's word.

The French riots are what happens when a country can no longer fund the promises it makes to its citizens. Riots like this just happened all across the Third World, as rising prices outstripped the (huge) subsidies governments pay to keep fuel affordable for the lower middle classes and below. In France, state spending makes up an astounding 57.1% of GDP, higher than in many Communist nations. 15% goes to public pensions alone. France has established a baffling and complex network of subsidies and tax rebates and cash transfers which mean just about every person living in France receives some benefit from the French state. Meanwhile, GDP growth has been either modest or stagnant for years. The French economy simply doesn't generate enough added value to pay all its bureaucrats (and their pensions) and finance all of its benefits and subsidies. France's state debt is already high and increasing rapidly. The French political class, like the political class in many Third World countries, is part of the problem. No political party is willing to state the truth, which is that France has been living beyond its means for decades, and must make massive cuts across the bord to stay fiscally viable. The majority of the French have been conditioned to believe that their right to various subsidies, such as "free" university educations, agriculture subsidies, government pensions etc., are inalienable: "How dare you balance the budget on the back of students / small business owners / artists/ public employees / farmers / the disabled / immigrants / pensioners / child-care workers / stay-at-home mothers / police," etc. It's a war of all against all for an ever-shrinking pie. It will get progressively worse until French voters are willing to support politicians who tell them the truth. Or until France is forced to seek a bailout from the EU or the IMF. Which is much more likely. edition.cnn.com/2026/10/19/e…
