These are just a few examples of the essential role these communities play in the global fight against climate change. Know any other great examples of how indigenous knowledge is helping save the planet? Let us know! ✊🌱✨💙

Learning from these communities to promote climate resilience will be vital for restoring damaged habitats as well as avoiding endangering them in the first place.

Indigenous communities have a wealth of knowledge that helps promote sustainable and resilient lifestyles. Community forests under the stewardship of indigenous peoples, such as those in the Brazillian Amazon, are less susceptible to deforestation and have larger carbon stores.

Despite the importance of their knowledge, they are often excluded from environmental decision-making processes. @IPCC_CH however have recognised that collaborating with indigenous peoples will boost global efforts to adapt to climate change.

Indigenous peoples are disproportionately affected by climate change despite contributing little to greenhouse gas emissions. Although they make up only 5% of the global population, indigenous peoples care for more than 25% of the world’s land and 80% of its biodiversity!

Countries need to continue to make progress and it is especially important that wealthier nations support low- and middle-income nations in their efforts to do so. #WorldEnvironmentDay

The EPI combines data on many indicators of sustainability into one single number + provides a summary of the state of sustainability around the world. It categorises 11 issues, eg. agriculture + air quality, into two policy objectives: ecosystem vitality + environmental health.
