3 months since my tonsillectomy.
After a rocky initial recovery, it's been life-changing.
No more constant sore throats, more energy, told I'm looking really well - and I feel it - and better oral health.
Not for the faint-hearted, but so worth it.
Starting to feel like the last person left on earth that still hasn't ever used AI.
Anyone else out there?
It’s apple and pear season, so naturally the Coop is selling pears from South Africa and apples from New Zealand.
There are SO many reasons to eat local produce, but the big supermarkets are not making it easy…
My grass in July vs my grass today.
Nothing different but time and rain.
A life lesson in nature heals; be patient.
Today my parents celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary, and our beloved family home of over 25 years went on the market.
Meanwhile I went for a glorious 8 mile walk and then ate fish and chips while watching the sunset.
Delighted to have had my thoughts on this important topic published in the BMJ, and to have been quoted below...
Is it okay to cry at work?
"Ultimately, to cry is to be human, and being human is central to being a doctor. Having said that, context is clearly important."

Spent yesterday feeling under the weather. By evening I had a fever of 39.2*C and I was rigoring uncontrollably. Today low-grade fever and cold symptoms. Feels identical to previous flu A. It's EARLY SEPTEMBER...
(Flu and Covid lateral flow tests being delivered tomorrow)
Me to ENT: I’ve got a choir tour 6 weeks after my tonsillectomy date…
ENT: it’s going to be tight…
Week 3: gets an infection and is readmitted…
Week 5: still not healed and starting to panic….
Week 6:
Absolutely delighted that these are finally finished: a labour of love and a pleasure in equal measure.
Smith Responses 2 incoming! (IYKYK)
Turns out I didn’t just lose the stratospheric top of my voice because I was “getting old”; it was actually because my tonsils were the size of Jupiter.
TOP Cs ARE BACK: watch out Allegri, we have unfinished business.
6 weeks to the day post tonsillectomy and I have arrived in London ahead of an exciting few days of singing, feeling well and in full voice.
There were times I truly never thought I’d get here.
So relieved and grateful, and excited for the days ahead!
Yet again, didn’t listen to my body.
Didn’t listen to the increasing pain and fluctuating fatigue 2 weeks post tonsillectomy and marched through an intense week at work.
Crashed on Friday night and ended up back on the ward with an infection.
Recovery part 2 starts now…
5 weeks later, including 2 weeks lying low after surgery, I have unpacked my final moving boxes following the delivery of two beautiful new bookcases.
Absolutely loving making this house a home ✨
Day 15 post-tonsillectomy, and it's slow progress. Still in a fair amount of pain (though NOTHING like it was), and still a lot of scabbing, which is rare this far down the line.
Trying to stay patient but also thoroughly fed up...
