Kevin O’Connell and JJ McCarthy is the same storyline that Justin Herbert and Mike McDaniel have currently going on. Don’t mess with a quarterbacks mechanics if you don’t have to.
Part of me wonders if JJ McCarthy struggled in Minnesota partly because KOC was too focused on fixing his throwing mechanics.
It felt like every conversation about JJ came back to his footwork, throwing motion, or how he threw the ball too hard.
It reminds me of golf. Imagine standing over a shot thinking about five different swing thoughts. Those things matter in practice, but during a round? You’re just getting in your own head instead of playing.
The “throws too hard” criticism always struck me as odd too. NFL receivers have been catching rockets off JUGS machines forever. Obviously touch and trajectory matter, but I wonder if all this emphasis became another thing JJ was consciously trying to manage during games instead of just playing football.
I’m not saying his mechanics weren’t an issue. I’m wondering whether the constant focus on them became an issue of its own.
It’s a tiny sample size in New York, but I have a hard time believing a change of scenery alone explains how different he’s looked.
At what point does coaching a player’s mechanics start getting in the way of their ability to actually play?

I wanna see what Herbert to Jeremiah looks like

For added context: Michigan offered Jeremiah Smith a scholarship in May 2022, while Jim Harbaugh was the Wolverines’ head coach.
So Smith was already on Michigan’s recruiting radar before Harbaugh ever became the Chargers’ head coach.

Correct. I think the odds of him being OC are low
I would love nothing more than Shane Steichen and Justin Herbert reuniting. Regardless of the fact Shane Steichen manages football games like he learned from Anthony Lynn. The offense would be enough to overcome it.
𝗥𝗨𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗦: Colts’ HC Shane Steichen could draw serious interest from teams if he’s fired this offseason, per @HolderStephen
Many around the league view him as a good coach in a bad situation.
Fine put the offensive line issues aside.
Just watch the Chiefs tape. Not a single player on offense looks good. Players on offense have regressed. No one lines up properly and the defense respects nothing the offense is doing nor presenting pre snap. Whose fault is that?

Watch a chargers game from 2025 and watch a Chargers game in 2026.
Tell me who the problem is..
Hint: Its not a player on the field
