Nick Saban argues that success can be more dangerous than failure: “I was blessed to never have what I call relief syndrome. When you have a big win, you’re kind of relieved. You let your guard down a little bit. You think, ‘I should have the opportunity to celebrate my success.’ Then you let that carry over into the next challenge. It starts affecting habits and performance.” “When we won, I was in the middle of everybody’s ass. When we lost, I wasn’t so much. The players were already humiliated by the fact that they didn’t win.” “When you win, sometimes people have a much harder time dealing with success than they do failure. When people fail, they want to change. They want to do whatever they have to do to make it right.” “When you win, you feel like, ‘I should be able to celebrate this.’ Our society actually promotes that.” “We won 19 games in a row twice at Alabama. Both times, we lost to a team that wasn’t as good as us. It was because we could not deal with success.” “It starts to affect your preparation, your habits and practice. Those things start showing up in the game.” “Then you get exposed."
