You bought Starlink.
You plugged in the dish. You connected to the Wi-Fi. You started browsing. That was 6 months ago.
Since then, you’ve used Starlink the same way you used your old ISP you connect and you browse. You’ve never split your Wi-Fi bands to put fast devices on 5 GHz and smart home devices on 2.4 GHz. You’ve never changed the default DNS to speed up every page load. You’ve never turned on content filtering to block malware and adult content across every device in the house with one toggle. You’ve never set up a guest network to keep visitors off your main network. You’ve never opened the hidden Statistics page that shows exactly why your speeds drop. You’ve never used the obstruction tool to find the perfect dish position. And you’ve never enabled Snow Melt mode that prevents your internet from dying every time it snows.
A network engineer who’s installed over 300 Starlink systems from rural homes to off-grid cabins to RVs crossing the country told his neighbor something after hearing him complain about “slow Starlink” for the third time that changed how the neighbor used the system permanently.
“You’re paying $120/month for a satellite internet system with a built-in security filter, a diagnostic suite, a snow-melting heater, a Wi-Fi scanner, a guest network, a sleep scheduler, a debug console, and 4 other features you’ve never configured. You set up the dish and connected to the Wi-Fi. That’s step 1 of 11. You stopped at step 1. The ‘slow internet’ you’ve been complaining about isn’t slow Starlink it’s unconfigured Starlink. Eighty percent of the speed complaints I see disappear with 3 settings changes in the app. The satellite is fine. The dish is fine. The router configuration is the problem and the router hasn’t been touched since the day you plugged it in.”
