Love this idea. I am not convinced compaction leads to good outcomes so I try my best to avoid it at all costs. In practice this means a lot of handoff documents/artifacts. Starting new sessions/threads all the time, valuing fresh context windows and guarding them from filling up too much. Not even just because they get more expensive, but also because they get loony. This likely changes as the frontier continues to improve. But for now at the end of October 2026, this is how I maintain high quality and velocity.
Compaction is a mistake. When an agent's context fills up, tools like Codex and Claude Code compact it: 1. The model prefills the entire session again 2. It writes a summary of everything so far 3. A new session starts from that summary I measured this on a real ~400k-token session with Opus 5.5: β†’ 38 s and $1.99 when the prompt cache has expired β†’ 29 s and $0.17 when it hasn't And the summary is lossy. The exact error message, the file path, the one number you needed is often gone. So I do something new for Mainplane Context retrieval works the other way around. Mainplane keeps the full record of every session as a file. When the context fills up, a new session starts right away with one instruction: "You are continuing session X. Retrieve key context from it as you go." The agent searches the old session and copies the exact lines it needs, when it needs them. Same session, same model: 15 s and $0.10 to get back to work. It does not depend on a cache hit, and nothing is paraphrased. This is the bitter lesson applied to agent memory. Don't hand-design what the model should remember. Give it the full record and good tools, and let it decide. Mainplane is open source (MIT). Link in the first comment.

we had some customers unsure where to add a model in the playground, so we made it a bit more clear

β€œwe don’t support internet explorer” internet explorer: you will support my legacy πŸ˜€
Your 404 log is full of /favicon.ico because of a decision made in 1999. Internet Explorer 5 looked for that file in the site root. No <link> tag required. 27 years later, browsers still try it if you haven't declared an icon. A bit of 1999 hanging around in server logsπŸ˜†

i hear you, man. there’s a lot changing. but give the upside the same room you’re giving the downside. some of the things becoming possible are worth being excited about. you don’t have to believe everything will be fine to believe there’s something worth building toward. i think we have more say in how this goes than the doom makes it feel. 🫢 🦐

day 16 of #shrimpposting until @ngrokHQ puts a little logo next to my name: the coveted rizz badge. every company wants employees who act like owners until one starts doing seafood-based demand generation before breakfast this is founder mode.
day 15 of shrimpposting for the @ngrokHQ rizz badge. somewhere in a CRM a future customer is going to write β€œthe shrimp guy” under β€œhow did you hear about us” i need @SamCRichard to be sitting down when that happens because she didn’t believe I keep this going for longer than two weeks!
