Hey team #soils & #sediments, anyone have a favorite sample filing system for whirl-packed samples? Mostly, I organize by project year in drawers, but with bigger projects, I need to sub-divide and catalog more precisely. Anyone got a favorite sample box/cabinet/organizer?

In the end, we settled on cardboard boxes by sampling day. I had been hoping to use CD boxes, but those are hard to come by these days for some reason….

I like to think I do pretty cool research & that the figures in my papers are compelling. But then I see something like this (from Njoku & Kong, 1977, JGR) & I am reminded that A) We are standing on the shoulders of giants, & B) the retro future is cooler than the real future.

Sure, my radiometer fits on a drone and the microwave data can be processed on a laptop from my couch. That just makes it more convenient to collect and process the measurements. Njoku and Kong is an experiment with style and vision! doi.org/10.1029/JB082i020p03…

Recycling + crushed glass sand manufacturing + wetlands restoration. What’s not to love? Maybe a lot? This is certainly gas and diesel heavy. And it is literally using energy to turn glass back into sand. But it is definitely diverting waste. Intriguing! nytimes.com/2024/04/27/clima…

The best thing about learning the #geosciences in the field is that it helps put everything in perspective. Students on the ⁦@colgateuniv⁩ Wales Study Group exploring Eryri (Snowdon) yesterday.

Into soil brines, chemical weathering, #Antarctica, or the future of soil development at the poles? Check out @colgateuniv alum Izzy King's new work just out in GSA Bulletin! bit.ly/49OIiaf

Why not add some #geology to your #Thanksgiving table by making Syracuse Salt Potatoes (like we did in class today). SYR sits atop Silurian-age evaporite deposits (limestone, gypsum, and halite) which form natural salt springs.

Take it to the 200-level: the crust of salt on the potatoes is thicker than could be produced by the evaporation of brine on the potato when you take it out of the pot.

Just like real evaporite deposits, salt potato crusts form as brine migrates as groundwater towards the evaporation front. Here, salty brine wicks up and out of the potato towards the dry surface, leaving even more salt behind and making a thick, delicious evaporite crust.

Had a great time at #GSA2023 last week, sharing Antarctic science alongside these stellar student scientists! Also, anyone who wants to talk more science over on Bluesky, I've got invite codes to share.

I'm going to put googly eyes on my lab's nutating rocker just to experience it rolling its eyes like a surly teenager every time I power it on.

Go Onyx! A meandering river (over some reaches) in an unvegetated permafrost environment! sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
🌊 #RiverCup 2023 Match-up 6 🏆 Klamath River has one of the largest dam removals in world history! 4 dams on this river will be removed in the next 2 years! 🚧 Onyx River is the longest river in Antarctica and flows only during the summer months. ❄️

Because it's Friday, I can't help but notice the similarities between the Farnsworth et al. (2023) prediction for the next supercontinent cycle and the #FinalFantasy 1 world map. In 250 million years, FF1 will still be an outstanding model for RPGs.
Check out Pangea Ultima - modeled for Planet Earth in 250 million years! If this supercontinent is sitting on the equator, we'll have massive, high temperature deserts. I do like me a desert, but this one will be biiig - Farnsworth et al. @Nature

Days like this are precious in central NY! And also, I've got some invite codes if folks are interested in expanding blue.sci. #geosciences

Happy #WorldWaterMonitoringDay! @colgateuniv Earth and Environmental Geosciences students were out measuring discharge on campus at Payne Brook. Discharge measurements help build up the field record of stream flow on campus that is measured at the Colgate Climate Network gages.

Understanding the Earth is the foundation of good stewardship of this planet. @colgateuniv students were out in the Shawangunk mountains this weekend exploring Ordovician seas and wandering up Silurian mountain streams.... before stopping for ice cream.
