There's no strong example of a franchise lead dying and being immediately recast or being done successfully. You'll point to Superman or Bond, but none of the actors died while still leading a series.

Heath Ledger was a co-star yes, but not the lead of the series and it took 8 years before we would get another attempt on film. Brandon Lee had most of this work completed for The Crow, and the sequels were atrocious, eventually falling into the direct-to-DVD model.
