THE 2026 MONEYBADGER REPORT:
Most of what is written about crypto in South Africa measures trading that happens on exchanges, or money moving across borders. Almost none of it measures people paying for things.
This report, published today, examines how South Africans use Bitcoin and cryptocurrency for everyday retail payments. It draws on real, completed payments at South African merchants across the MoneyBadger network, to show what people buy, where they shop, and what they pay with.
The picture that emerges looks less like investing and more like everyday shopping: small baskets, spread evenly across the month, repeated quarter after quarter, in-store and increasingly online.
What began as Bitcoin at a single supermarket chain is now a mix of Bitcoin and rand-backed stablecoins across the wider economy. In the first half of 2026, payments across the network grew 95% on the same period last year, and the rand value spent grew 176%.

new model for engineering team structure in 2026:
2 people only
one pirate and one architect
the pirate's job is to move as fast as possible to develop valuable, shipped product features by vibe coding.
the architect's job is to turn the product surface discovered by the pirate into a reliable, structured machine—also by vibe coding, but at a slower, more well-reasoned pace.
every product needs a pirate but most product's only need an architect once they some form of PMF, and in that case they usually don't need one full-time. architects can work across many codebases and solve interesting technical challenges. pirates go hard on a product that they own end-to-end.
it's joever, Linus Torvalds is vibe coding

📣 Introducing IGC: In Game Collectables! 🎉
We're thrilled to bring your favourite game characters to life like never before. 🎮✨Just like magic, IGC creates custom collectables that capture your in-game personas right from the game. 🎨🤩. #InGameCollectables #GenerativeAI
We use AWS Batch at IGC to run our ML pipelines. It's so annoying that here's no way to tell why a job is stuck in RUNNABLE. Is the image bad? Do we need more capacity on EC2? Is AWS having a bad day? Who knows! Play whack-a-mole until you find out. Is it just me? /rant
Arrived in San Francisco yesterday and... holy moly. It feels pretty apocalyptic in large areas of the city. I bought some band aids at a Wallgreens and it was wrecked on the inside with people breaking off security locks and stealing stuff while I'm there. 😳
I'll be at GDConf in San Francisco. If you're in the area and like to talk about AI, games and collectables, flick me a DM and let's meet up!

Super excited to share that we just launched a new website for In Game Collectables. igc.studio
We're also hiring for machine learning and additive manufacturing roles. Have a look if you're keen to work with us on the intersection of AI/CV, the games industry and additive manufacturing.
