Xavier Becerra has described himself as "a son of immigrants" and said repeatedly that his "parents came to America with $12 in their pocket."
But his father was actually born in Sacramento and has always been an American citizen.
The Democratic candidate for California Governor told the L.A. Times that “I am very proud of my parents, and I consider them immigrants because even though my dad was born in the U.S. — in a country that wouldn’t treat him the way it would treat other U.S. citizens — my dad was a proud immigrant...I am proud that I am their son.
