French, German and Spanish opened doors to friendships in Spain, adventures in Kosovo and a lifetime of seeing the world differently. To every student: be curious, be brave, learn a language and discover just how far it can take you. Your next adventure starts with one new word.

Imagine learning a language and suddenly being able to understand the song everyone else is singing, chat with people you’d never otherwise meet, travel somewhere new and feel like you belong, and unlock opportunities you never knew existed. Another language changes your world.

Together with our NCLE partners, we extend heartfelt congratulations to all the students who received their GCSE results today!
Vicky Gough, British Council Schools Advisor said, “Language learning not only broadens horizons but deepens cultural understanding. We must continue to bring all languages to life through exchanges, cultural programmes and real-world connections to allow students to understand why languages matter.”

When you learn another language, you learn a new 'normal', and you connect with another people. You embrace difference, and you're more aware of other ways of being & living. Not only do you develop transferable skills, but your mind is open to the wealth of humanity as a whole.

If you want to experience life beyond your confines, or connect with people outside of your circle, or understand the world a little bit better, or seal deals and win arguments, or gain an edge in jobs and appointments, or access novel opportunities, another language is for you.

Some languages I learned in classrooms. Others I chased alone, discovered abroad or needed for work. Each one changed me in a different way. The greatest reward has always been seeing more and more of the world through someone else's eyes. Keep learning. It's always worth it.

With the kids out of school for summer this mother found a really neat way to help the kids cool off and be creative at the same time. How cool is this?

The choreography of teaching 30 children at the same time > quite a long read but dare I say I think it's worth it. Nail this, you've nailed it! teacherhead.com/2026/01/11/t… via @teacherhead

It doesn’t matter where your language story starts. It might be school French, Spanish from a treasured holiday, German because it’s close to English, Welsh, Gaelic or Cornish as part of your heritage, or the challenges of Chinese or Arabic. It's a whole new window on the world.
