I still can't get over the complete lack of impact agentic coding has had on software from a user's perspective. Our industry looks faintly ridiculous for waxing lyrical about the "agentic era" when it's had zero observable impact to the end user.

1/ The marketing was cringe and fraud is bad; I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who disagrees, myself included. Nonetheless it’s not endearing to sling mud at others in your profession or to endorse others doing it on your timeline.
Replying to @GergelyOrosz
Good one on crypto. The whole ā€œweb 3ā€ branding (and rebranding frontend dev to ā€œweb 2ā€) made it seem crypto development is superior/more difficult… to anyone not paying attention. It was not, and so much of crypto $$ was about insider trading, not technology at all

3/ It’s completely fine if you aren’t interested in any of this stuff; however, using your platform and reach to reduce the hard work of researchers and software engineers to the individuals committing fraud or originating bad marketing is quite horrible.

4/ I welcome you to reach out with questions. If you DM me, I'll give you my work number to call or text. Good, technical discussions don't happen on the timeline and my explanations don't fit in a tweet. If I don't know the answer to a question I usually know someone who does.

šŸ‘‰ We’re back with another great piece of open source software. @futexlabs released a banger open source library that deserves a place in the Rust standard library: a lazily initialized array! The idea is simple: the buffer is allocated up front on the stack, but its memory is not initialized on creation. There’s three huge benefits to this implementation on the surface: resource management is simplified in the absence of a heap allocation, everything has a limit; declaring them up front forces you to think about them concretely, and highly predictable performance characteristics. FxArray features ergonomic APIs for manipulating the data structure, does not have any required dependencies, and supports no_std out of the box. Developers may however opt into the ā€œserdeā€ feature flag for serialization and deserialization support. This library is inspired by Tiger Style, the engineering methodology created by the great folks at @TigerBeetleDB. Check it out on Github & Crates io github.com/Futex-Labs/Lazy-A… crates.io/crates/fx_array

In terms of ā€œgimmicky programming conference stuffā€, the Java Ring might be the coolest. You’d get your ring, write down your coffee preferences, and then use it to authenticate for free ā€œJavaā€ at JavaOne 1998. Of course, it’s got a little microprocessor running the JVM with a whopping 6KB of NVRAM. At the time, they claimed(?) that the ā€œconference was the computerā€, because 14,000 people were wearing the rings. As far as I can tell, no one used any sort of…real P2P processing. Regardless, their marketing called it a parallel computer. Funnily enough, ~30 years later the dream *might* live on. Someone named yamad has done a great job reverse engineering the Java Ring, keeping track on their blog. Replacing a dead, sealed battery was difficult, but from what I can tell they managed to execute+write new programs to the device running on the original JVM! I’m really, really tempted to get some JavaRings now just to see if I could do *any* p2p stuff…
