Handshakes, meetings and photos are not how humanitarians will measure impact of UN General Assembly next week. We want serious action on the four huge risks running out of control.👇 #UNGA81

The visit focused on #UK-funded projects in #Syria, future support opportunities, and the vital role of civil society in strengthening stability and #social_cohesion.
#Bahar emphasized the need to shift from #emergency aid to #sustainable programs that #empower local #communities.

Even when I took this job, I wasn’t sure I’d be visiting Syria any time soon. Great to be back in #Damascus! 🇸🇾

On the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Chemical Warfare, I stand in Douma - a city scarred by Assad’s chemical attacks - to honour the victims and reaffirm the UK’s unwavering commitment to accountability.
No impunity for chemical weapons. Ever.

Delivery of a first convoy of aid to As-Sweida from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent - including supplies from the UN - is a welcome and desperately needed first step, but much more relief is needed. Our teams in country and HQ are mobilised to move as much as we can.
🚨 The @SYRedCrescent has dispatched a convoy to #Sweida, delivering much needed #humanitarian assistance to families and critical supplies to maintain essential services such as hospitals, bakeries, and access to drinking water.

Horrified by the violence in Southern Syria. A sustainable ceasefire is vital.
I spoke to Syrian Foreign Minister @AsaadHshaibani yesterday as part of UK efforts to urge a peaceful resolution.
We want to see the fighting ended, civilians protected and humanitarian access enabled.

Alarmed by escalating scenes in Syria. We want to see civilians protected and the ceasefire upheld, with those responsible for violence in Suwayda held to account.
Israel's attacks in Damascus risks destabilising the country. Syria's sovereignty must be respected.

Landmark event this week in Geneva. Syrian Commissioners for Transitional Justice & Missing Persons together with @TheICTJ, convened Syrian civil society and the international community. Glad to be there & look forward to supporting Syrian efforts on these crucial files.
Pleased to attend @SyriaCivilDef General Assembly Meeting yesterday in Damascus and learn of their momentous decision to transition activities to the Syrian Government. A promise made in 2014, a promise delivered with 🇬🇧 support.
First week back in the office after my time with @ukinerbil and the sun is shining on the @FCDOGovUK. Looking forwards to getting stuck back in!
My year with @ukinerbil has come to an end. It has been a real privilege to serve 🇬🇧 in the #KRI. But how do you say goodbye to somewhere that’s been home for the last year?! By saying see you soon. So for now, some highlights of the last year…🧵 1/6
And of course no time spent in Erbil would be complete without the mandatory #Citadel photo! 🧵 5/6
I’ve still got a lot to explore and some wonderful friends to visit, so I know I’ll be back. So not a ‘goodbye’, but a ‘see you soon’. Sor supas #twitterkurds 🧵 6/6
