Hello for anybody checking my profile from the dispatch fandom, I’m Flambert author Darkhorse6! I wrote completed fics: Need Some Help? and Firebreather, in progress Bitched (and 7 Days, to be published soon) archiveofourown.org/users/Da…

Disclaimer first, I -ADORE- my readers. But if AO3 got rid of comments I would completely stop writing fic. I might as well only focus on my private works, if both of them net me zero feedback or community; I write fic to talk to people, but it’s not the only thing I write.
But... I love commenting on other people's fics... 🥺

I think this is the foundation concept behind the vitriol towards writers we’ve seen since the AO3 shutdown. “Anyone can type/edit/post a fic”. I’ve clocked over 300k words a year for three years, my acc is somewhere around a mil. Try it and let me know if it’s in fact work.
Replying to @AsterVagais
No dummy. The ‘threat’ was that if they left then the readers would have nothing to read. But anyone can type edit and post a fic. That’s why them saying that was fucking stupid. Like you. It’s not a real threat obviously. But THEY posed it as such

Ig some of my fics that I wrote for free, out of my love for creating, were scraped for this site to charge. Ig this is the future of AI, riding the labor behind human passion to make lazy people rich. Writing is my art; I’ve shared it since I was 15 because I love it.

I’ve written over a million words in two fandoms over the last few years. It’s how I express my love and life and emotion. Stripping the author from the work to profit from something that was made for free, to share with fans, is reprehensible beyond description.

The thing about this AO3 discourse is that yes, real writers will lose the motivation to write. But the demand is still there, so what I would expect is for amateur AI writers will jump to fill the gap. Unfortunately I think that’s why anti-writer posts are going crazy rn
Because you people genuinely are such big fucking babies. You all massively overestimate how much impact this laughable "strike" has and by the time AO3 is back up and running there will still be enough writers to keep it running. You are not writing HP, you are writing FANFICS.

PSA for the outage, I’m fine with sharing PDFs or GDrives with my fics in them. PLEASE DO NOT upload to another fanfic or social media site, if AO3 full on disappears I WILL UPLOAD MY OWN FICS. I have copies of everything, they’re not gone forever.
i don't care if you pass around pdfs of my fics or put them in gdrives but please do not reupload on fanfic. net or wattpad or any other alternative reading sites thank you :)

If I find my fics on another publishing site I will report them stolen and be very upset. My fics are coming back, I’ll also happily send full PDFs of my work to anybody who DMs me if you don’t want to wait for AO3.

Well…I guess I’ll have plenty of new chapters locked and loaded for after the plague 🥲
We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/

I think there’s a polite way to give criticism as a readers, but you have to do it -as a reader-. Like, if you struggled to digest a scene transition, or if a major plot point was hard to pick up. That stuff can actually help us improve, rather than personal preferences.
"fic writers not wanting unprompted criticism or advice is a literary crisis" no it's just there's no value in taking internet advice from a rando especially when most of the time these people are using "critique" as a thin veil to dress up their own personal preferences as fact

But this also requires a degree of self awareness and nuance that not everybody has, so if you’re not sure, then stick to generally positive feedback. Especially for obviously newer writers.

Ig I have less grievance over writers using AI because if you can’t get away from using AI to write, you will ALWAYS be bad at writing. Always. AI is mediocre at best, and writing is among its worst skills. AI writers will waste decades that they could have used to practice -

- while novice writers who love the craft will continue to improve until they inevitably blow past every single AI work, because writing is a skill that takes training. Don’t be afraid to be bad at something, that’s the only way to improve.
