In 2011, the Toronto Blue Jays drafted an 18 year old pitcher named Daniel Norris out of Johnson City, Tennessee, and handed him a $2 million signing bonus. He went out and bought his dream vehicle with it. A 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia camper. Mustard yellow. Ten thousand dollars. Older than he was. He named it Shaggy. Then he moved into it. For the next several years, while his teammates rented condos and apartments during spring training, Norris slept in the back of that van. He tried parking near the beach at first. The police told him to move along and suggested a Walmart. So he parked behind the Walmart, next to the dumpsters. ESPN's Eli Saslow went and found him there in 2015 and described the morning routine. Norris waking up behind the dumpsters, digging through a half-empty cooler for eggs, smelling them to decide if they were still good, cooking them on a portable stove. Pulling the entire contents of his life into the parking lot to clean out the van. A surfboard. A subzero sleeping bag. One pair of jeans. Handwritten journals. Shoppers would stop and stare. He'd wave at them. At that point he had a 96 mile per hour fastball, a Nike deal, a couple million dollars in the bank, and he was living on $800 a month. That was the number he told his financial advisers to deposit into his checking account. Everything else stayed invested. The Blue Jays were not thrilled about it. Norris said the organization told him plainly they didn't think it was a good idea, and asked him why he was doing it. "You've got to understand, I've been doing stuff like this my whole life." He wasn't performing. He was trying to stay sane. "It's like a yin-and-yang thing for me. I'm not going to change who I am just because people think it's weird. The only way I'm going to have a great season is by starting out happy and balanced and continuing to be me." Then baseball saved his life. In April 2015, Norris's fastball started dipping under 90. The Blue Jays wondered if he was hurt, so they sent him in to get his throwing arm examined. The doctors weren't looking for cancer. They found it anyway. Thyroid cancer, in a 21 year old. If his arm hadn't been off, nobody would have been looking. He was traded to Detroit that July, in the David Price deal. He had surgery that offseason and beat it. Then he spent the winter surfing in Nicaragua, driving the van out to Oregon, and serving as grand marshal of the holiday parade back home in Johnson City. He was 22 years old. His Instagram bio at the time read: in search of three things. Eternal life. The strike zone. Good waves. Most athletes who come into money spend it proving they have it. Daniel Norris got two million dollars at 18, bought a van older than himself, parked it by a dumpster, and lived like he had nothing at all. Truly incredible story
I kept this story in my pocket for a long time.... September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day. Every year in Pittsburgh the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys. My first year as manager in Pittsburgh was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on. We didn't win. 19 consecutive losing seasons. 2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive. After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over. "My mom wants to talk to you." We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons. She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up. Roberto Jr. translated. "My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy." She was staring right at me. Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth: "I promise you, Vera. That won't happen." Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it." I said, "I hope I can keep it too." I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it. The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20. On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field. And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life. The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug. Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them. @Pirates

The Tigers today acquired left-handed pitching prospects Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf from the San Diego Padres for right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman. Mayfield was ranked as the #2 prospect in the Padres organization by MLB Pipeline.

Morning, Tiger fans. Skubal鈥檚 gone. Who鈥檚 next? Probably Gleyber Torres by Monday. Sad day in Detroit. The white flag is up. Another rebuild. We all thought we were past this. The answer was simple all offseason: sign Tarik Skubal. You had the best pitcher in baseball, and instead of building around him, you traded him. That鈥檚 baseball malpractice. Chris Ilitch is one of the wealthiest owners in baseball. If you鈥檙e not willing to spend to keep the best pitcher in the game and build around a team that鈥檚 already proven it can compete, then sell the team to someone who will. Here鈥檚 what makes this so frustrating: this wasn鈥檛 a bad baseball team. They鈥檙e still +52 in run differential despite being under .500. Good teams don鈥檛 outscore their opponents by that much by accident. The biggest problem wasn鈥檛 the starting rotation鈥攊t was the bullpen. Fix the bullpen instead of waving the white flag, and this team had a legitimate chance. And here鈥檚 the ironic part: even if they trade Gleyber Torres, this team still has a chance. If they can somehow patch together the bullpen and a couple of relievers get hot, they can still make a run. That鈥檚 what makes this decision so frustrating. The window wasn鈥檛 closed鈥攖hey chose to close it. Instead, they chose another rebuild. We鈥檒l never know how far this clubhouse could鈥檝e gone because ownership never gave them that chance. This fan base deserved better. Those players deserved better. Detroit deserved better. #DetroitTigers #RepDetroit #VandyOnTigers #VandyDandyReport
