the skills that actually get you hired (not 500 leetcodes): • auth flows (oauth, jwt, sessions) • db schema design & migrations • caching (redis, cdn) • background jobs & queues • file uploads & storage • realtime (websockets, pub/sub) • forms & validation • state management • testing (unit + e2e) • deploys & monitoring leetcode won’t save you. this stack will.

We've just finished migrating the @Shopify mobile app to @reactnative 🎉. This is our biggest app and was built over a decade. Here's how it went 🧵

So it’s official: until something changes in the future, accounting-wise the US is the most hostile place to start a software startup/small business. The only country in the world where developers’ salary cannot be expensed the same year: but needs to be amortised over 5 years.
The tax bill is dead. No retroactive 174 fix will happen. Keep lobbying so it whoever controls Congress after the election has it front of mind in the big tax rewrite of 2025.

almost exactly pareto - totally explains why most software is low quality most people (myself included) do the 0->1 part which is trivial for most projects 80% of the work is in polishing and it seems only 20% of people are focused on that
when on a team which one of these is more your role

you can always tell who was actually poor and who's just an Ivy League shitlib LARPing because the latter romanticizes aspects of poverty that real poor people desperately want to escape. when they think "noisy neighborhood," their mind conjures up some abuela playing tropipop out her breezy open window while she makes empanadas as a table of Chinese men laugh and play Mahjong on the street -- literal Hollywood movie shit. in reality, the noise of poverty is the woman next door screaming while she's getting beaten up by her drunk boyfriend, a schizo man shouting obscenities outside of your apartment window, and the blaring siren of ambulances coming to collect yet another overdose.

Hotels > @Airbnb, a horror story 🫠 It’s 2:30am in London. Flight delayed 3 hours. Raining. I message our host that we’re going to miss the check in window. There’s a fee. Weird since it’s self check in, but ok We get to the airbnb and the lockbox doesn’t work. Rain, rain..

When I left @OpenAI a little over a year ago, I signed a non-disparagement agreement, with non-disclosure about the agreement itself, for no other reason than to avoid losing my vested equity. (Thread)

If you use @SlackHQ, this is very bad. By default Slack is using all your internal convos to train their AI stuff. You can opt-out of this (allegedly) by sending an email to [email protected] with your workspace URL as content and "Slack Global model opt-out request" as the object.

App development on macOS has become such a complex mess. To make users able to even launch your app, you need to not only 1. maintain an Apple Developer account and 2. code sign your app (which is a mess in itself). You nowadays also need to "notarize" the app, meaning you send a copy of your app bundle to Apple along with a crypto signature (for your developer account.) Apple's servers then look at your app to make sure it is a well behaved little app and then adds an entry into a central database ("this app with this crypto signature is ok"). So how do you notarize an app? Oh, using the same codesign CLI tools provided by the absolutely massive download that is Xcode? No. You use altool which is kind of hidden inside Xcode (not on the PATH.) But wait, if the current date is after November 1, 2023 (newsflash: it is) you can't use altool. Apple no longer accepts notarization submissions from altool. So what do you do then? Well, you have to download Xcode 14 or later (yay, another 91284747 petabyte of whoknowswhat). Oh but it's not that simple, to run Xcode 14 you also have to upgrade your macOS version. It's like Apple are trying to deter developers from their platform. I was lucky enough to experience the golden years of Mac app development where it was a joy to make apps for your friends. The breeze of Cocoa and the ease of just putting a zip file on your homepage gave birth to so many wonderful apps. No wonder why the average macOS user today runs only web apps — there's little joy left in making mac apps!

Exactly, it’s not as if JavaScript is otherwise perfect. You learn the language to get the best out of it, and pay attention to the design flaws. Using let by default is a terrible decision.

esm was a breaking change in node we can pretend it wasn’t because it’s technically not - but in practice most people cannot get the in between working - it eventually blows up at this point to use esm pick deps that ship esm only - everything before is now broken
