What if single-payer healthcare is the wrong debate?
The amount of the check matters more than the number of entities writing it.
Maybe we should debate pricing first.

I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time.
We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s.
We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN.
For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee.
In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it.
Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further.

In addition to being unbelievably racist, this is also (obviously) totally false.

"We estimate that Mr Trump’s policies will cost the poorest tenth of American households, with average income after taxes and transfers of around $37,000, almost 3% of their income. The richest tenth, with average after-tax incomes of nearly $500,000, will gain nearly 3% (see chart 1). Households in the middle, with average income of roughly $100,000, lose more than $400"
The ACA attempted to reform healthcare WITHOUT touching actual healthcare prices.
Prices continue to escalate because commercial prices are *wildly* variable and largely uncapped.
Stop blaming ACA for problems it was never designed to solve.

In 2009, Goldman signed an open letter supporting the ACA "primarily because the ACA promised to 'bend the cost curve' of American health care."
But, "I could hardly imagine what would come next":
"The curve did not bend, and I now wish I hadn’t signed my name to that letter."
Yikes. Anthropic just pulled the exact accounting trick that companies did in 2000 bubble for IPO.
They hid all their expenses via convertible notes redeemable at IPO. $108 billion worth.
Dotcom firms often paid suppliers, ad agencies, lawyers and even landlords with stock or equity to save cash. AOL swapped shares for services and ads (e.g., Homestore, DrKoop). Telecom suppliers like Lucent, Cisco and Nortel used vendor financing, sometimes with equity or warrants, to drive equipment sales.

The next major cybersecurity failure may not begin with a sophisticated attack. It may begin with an ordinary business application that has more access than it needs. We need confidence that organizations can protect information and remain accountable when something goes wrong.
EXCLUSIVE: In less than 12 hours, a group of ex-DOGE cyber researchers were able to penetrate Anthropic’s systems using AI agents — including Slack channels where the most sensitive models are discussed.
This is just weeks after
Anthropic whistleblower Joseph Coxon charged the company w/launching “a hubristic gamble” from a “private company’s Slack.”

US Big Tech corporations are spending a staggering $1 trillion this year, or 3% of GDP, on AI capital expenditure (capex), largely for data centers.
China's tech companies are spending $123 billion on AI apex, which is just 0.6% of GDP.
But China's AI models perform just as well as US models -- and China's are open-source and much cheaper, and are thus becoming more popular around the world.
Keep in mind that China has 4 times the US population, but is spending 1/10th of what the US is spending on AI capex.
It is obvious that US AI capex is way, way too high, and represents extreme malinvestment. This is because the US AI sector is in an enormous bubble.
Looking at these two graphic images, I can’t help but think of the tale of “The Tortoise and The Hare” when it comes to the race between China and the US to dominate AI.
The US is still ahead, helped by its strong compute capabilities (ie access to all the chips it needs) and near-limitless access to capital. But Chinese models have been constantly tugging at their heels using a fraction of the spending.
Growing worries about the ability of today’s AI capex to generate meaningful returns might result in delays in US models that allow their Chinese peers to overtake them in the final innings of the game.

EL-SAYED: I get that the President takes personal offense to my first name. He doesn't mind as much when it's the Saudis who are funding his son-in-law's private equity. Doesn't seem to mind as much when it's the Qataris who are giving them a $400 million private jet. He just seems to have trouble pronouncing it when it's my name.
I don't care how he pronounces my name. I don't even care that he remembers my whole name. Because he can just go on and call me senator after November.

It's the same politics we've been debating for ~80yrs. The market-based status quo vs single-payer.
But there's a better path.
Single pricing. The amount of the check matters more than the number or type of payers.

After revisions, the economy added just 116,000 — 90% less.

To me there’s one very obvious reason Elizabeth Holmes doesn’t seem to understand what she did was wrong in You Can See Everything that I haven’t seen anyone mention and it’s not because “her mind works differently” it’s because a lawyer told her never to admit guilt on camera after a court orders you to pay $452 million in restitution if you were ever hoping to get it reduced.
