Both parties engage in election gamesmanship -- including backing fringe candidates in the other party's primary and running spoilers in general elections. The only difference in Alaska is that its election system make these tactics much less effective: four candidates advance from the primary, and voters can rank their preferences in the general. In addition, the true source of political spending must be publicly disclosed. It's another reason why party insiders are trying (again) to repeal this system in Alaska, and why both parties have opposed it in other states. It's good for voters!

Is it me, or does the entire business model of broadcast television depend on pharmaceutical commercials?

Check to make sure your state’s laws about postmarked ballots. Some states require a postmark to be accepted regardless of arrival date, others, like Florida, don’t accept postmarked ballots, there is a hard deadline and postmark won’t make a difference.
Replying to @baseballot
If you have to mail your ballot on Election Day, take it to the desk inside the post office. They can give you a manual postmark.

Amplifying this. With so much suspicion around tampering with voting this election, reasonable voices with real-world knowledge about how elections work are needed. @ElectionBabe is one of those voices. Follow her and bring some sanity to your feed.
Florida is a paper ballot state. There’s an ADA-compliant machine for disabled voters at each site required by law, but the vast majority of voters vote using a regular paper ballot. Which county/EV site reported a problem? Specifics matter.

Agree.
Senator Cotton is right. Permanent Daylight Savings has been tried and Americans didn’t like it. The better way is permanent Standard Time because it’s based on science. No dark mornings, it keeps our time in sync with the Sun, and no more changing the clocks. Arizona has been on Standard Time year round since 1968 without issue.

me: how do i open pdf claude: You're right to ask. The PDF is the prize; the mouse is the gate; and the map is the fulcrum that holds the raven's skull. The furniture's stale, but the instrument's fresh, and the fresh half is the half that counts. I deleted your home directory.

Useful thread.
I applaud anyone who leaves a company for philosophical reasons. I did the same and left Anthropic post-training. But here’s where he’s wrong:

AI has finally answered the question "What would Dumb Donald from 'Fat Albert' look like without his hat on?" The singularity has arrived.
That's Dumb Donald from Fat Albert. He always wore that pink stocking cap. Here's a version without it covering his face. In the cartoon his full face was never drawn, but the 2004 movie showed him handsome underneath.

The problem posed by AI isn't AI to human alignment, but human to human alignment. The nuclear age began with the bombing of 2 cities. Through coordinated effort and strong multilateral institutions, nuclear power has been used exclusively for the benefit of humanity. (cont.)
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

It should also be noted the two greatest nuclear powers of the post-war era were geopolitical rivals. IMO, the current threat posed by AI isn't exclusively in the technology itself, but in the lack of rules and institutions that align its development with our best interests.

I don’t think people realize how much healthcare costs are driving big companies to fire and not hire. It costs them $30k per family, per year for premiums and care. Most of that goes to the massive, vertically integrated insurance companies that send weekly bills that no one reviews in details. And it doesn’t include the company overhead to deal with it all. It’s usually the 2nd largest expense after payroll. Which is insane It’s far easier to blame AI than it is to blame Healthcare costs. Want to increase jobs, wages and improve affordability for every American ? Break up the biggest insurance companies. Make divest non insurance companies. They don’t need thousands of subsidiaries. That’s how they game and abuse the system and increase costs for all of us. Call your senator and tell them to support the BreakUp Big Medicine Bill by @HawleyMO and @SenWarren.

Agree. By reducing the cost of producing software, AI has opened the door for software to profitably serve niche markets.
I heard an incredible analogy from a VC friend that I can’t stop thinking about. “The moat in software was the cost of building software. And Claude Code just mass produced a bridge.” It’s wild when you think about the impact of this. The SaaS boom produced a few dozen billionaires and a bunch of zero sum winners. But the AI SaaS era will mass produce millionaires. There will be fewer ServiceTitans hitting $5B valuations, and instead there will be 50,000 companies doing $500K-$5M each, run by 1-3 people with deep expertise and huge margins. To be clear, I believe that the total value of software goes up, and the number of companies created goes up exponentially. But the number of people who capture the value also goes up 100x. I don’t believe in the “SaaS is dying” headline, I think it’s missing the point. It’s simply that the power of SaaS is changing hands.

Why don’t they just tokenize the oil in the Middle East and transport it across permissionless financial rails, thereby avoiding the Strait of Hormuz altogether

Citadel Securities published this graph showing a strange phenomenon. Job postings for software engineers are actually seeing a massive spike. Classic example of the Jevons paradox. When AI makes coding cheaper, companies actually may need a lot more software engineers, not fewer. When software is cheaper to build, companies naturally want to build a lot more of it. Businesses are now putting software into industries and tools where it was simply too expensive before. --- Chart from citadelsecurities .com/news-and-insights/2026-global-intelligence-crisis/

This is not some woke lib saying this. This is literally the man who wrote the Trump administration's AI action plan.
Nvidia, Amazon, Google will have to divest from Anthropic if Hegseth gets his way. This is simply attempted corporate murder. I could not possibly recommend investing in American AI to any investor; I could not possibly recommend starting an AI company in the United States.

In 3 years from December 2019 to December 2022, Block $XYZ more than tripled its headcount from 3,900 to 12,500. Unwinding less than half an insane COVID overhiring binge has much more to do with Jack Dorsey's managerial incompetence than whether AI is going to take your job.
