Last Friday’s announcement is at complete odds with Canada’s industrial policy, and @NRCan’s Nuclear Strategy amidst a global nuclear renaissance, one in which national labs are being leveraged to accelerate industry and the private sector. It begs serious questions of the management and more importantly governance of the national lab.
Today’s Western Canada SMR Forum in Edmonton showcased ongoing momentum in the sector. But many were frustrated with the announcement late Friday from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) that they are shuttering the only two programs designed to open national testing site and lab access to industry actors.
This is shortsighted and counter to the objectives of the recent National Nuclear Strategy as well as many Arctic defence and economic goals that depend on advances in micro and small reactors from Canadian companies and entrepreneurs.

This is what Team Canada looks like 🇨🇦
Ahead of the Canada Investment Summit, Canada's five largest banks have committed billions to energy, critical minerals, defence and aerospace, AI and infrastructure.
This is domestic capital backing Canadian companies at every stage, showing that investing right here at home is the best choice for smart dollars.
With territories, provinces and the federal government in alignment and capital lined up behind them, we can move nation-building project projects faster from proposal to construction to production.
More to come this week!

🚀 Canada Investment Summit prospectus lists four space opportunities
Ottawa's investor pitchbook for this week's summit runs 167 entries and includes four for the space sector: Telesat's Lightspeed constellation, Wyvern's deployable-optics program, Maritime Launch's Spaceport Nova Scotia, and CSMC's portable reactor.
🔍 The real story: a $230-million price tag on Wyvern's program that SpaceQ couldn't find published anywhere before, plus a new opening for minority investors in Telesat's Lightspeed.

Calls for immediate, global 1-2 year slowdown in AI development
Time to trust the people building the technology over the people merely investing in it
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

ONE CANADIAN MICROREACTOR PROGRAM JUST BECAME THREE, AND THE ARCTIC ONE IS TARGETING CRITICALITY IN 2028
THE PORTFOLIO SPLIT
· CSMC unveiled three named reactor platforms, POLAR-1, JAY-1 and ORCA-1, and says it is retiring its former LEUNR concept in favour of an application-driven strategy across Arctic and defence, space, and research missions.
· POLAR-1 is a transportable megawatt-scale microreactor for Arctic communities, defence installations and remote industrial sites, developed for transport aboard military airlift including the C-17, with first criticality targeted by 2028 and fleet-scale deployment envisioned from 2030.
· JAY-1 is a compact space reactor aimed at lunar night survival and sized for integration with future lunar landers and surface systems, while ORCA-1 is a research reactor platform for operator training, technology validation and workforce development.
The design lineage behind this program runs back to SLOWPOKE-2, the Canadian research reactor CSMC has been adapting under the now-retired LEUNR label, which makes ORCA-1 something close to a return to that design's original purpose. Naming is not licensing, and a 2028 criticality target implies a Canadian regulatory decision inside roughly two years, yet this release names no site, no licence application and no regulator. Read the split as market segmentation ahead of the next funding cycle rather than a step change in technical maturity.
Does splitting one reactor program into three missions widen the funding aperture, or thin out the engineering?

CSMC and @dansax were featured on The Canadian Explorers a couple of weeks ago. The team is putting in great work.
The Canadian Arctic needs scalable power.
The Arctic is becoming one of the most strategically important regions on Earth.
Yet much of the North still depends on fuel that must be shipped thousands of kilometres through some of the world's most challenging logistics corridors.
That is an energy problem. It is also a sovereignty problem.
Today, we're introducing POLAR-1, our transportable microreactor platform designed to provide reliable power for Arctic operations, defence installations, remote communities, and critical infrastructure.
If Canada wants to project capability in the North, we need energy systems that can operate where conventional infrastructure cannot.
That is what we're building.
Proud of our team taking another step toward making strategically deployable nuclear power a Canadian capability.

Today, @csmc_scms unveiled its family of advanced nuclear reactor platforms, POLAR-1, JAY-1, and ORCA-1, designed to address strategically important energy challenges related to Arctic sovereignty, defence readiness, scientific research, remote power, and future lunar exploration.
The timing could not be more relevant.
Next week in Edmonton, @dansax Founder and CEO of CSMC, will join the panel Powering Arctic Sovereignty: Nuclear Energy, Security, and Northern Development at the third edition of Pioneering New Nuclear in Western Canada.
As Western Canada examines the role of new nuclear in energy security, Arctic and remote deployment, industrial competitiveness, defence applications, and infrastructure resilience, @csmc_scms brings an important and timely perspective to the Forum.
